I rarely ever trust salesman sorry they are out to make a buck like everyone else nothing wrong with that I just look at salesman as hype machine for the manufactures

Check out "Runner's World" where they do reviews of running shoes for every season (winter, spring, etc.).

I have two pairs of the women's WT version of the NB 814. The shoe is heavy because it's designed for trail running so it has a thick and dense carbon rubber outsole, but it's also more durable than speed-running shoes which to me seem kind of flimsy. If you're a long-strider, your feet hit the ground with more impact so shoes with good shock absorption due to a thick outsole and midsole is the way to go, whether street or trail runner.

That's absolutely not the case. For one thing you have 5 or more different "manufacturers" making multiple different types of shoes. For another thing in an independent shoe store, they're making a money off repeat customers, not by appeasing shoe companies. Third of all there's almost no way you can get the information you need without having somebody else examine the structure of your feet.

Please the structure of your feet; if I need that then I should be going to a podiatrist since they would know more about feet then any shoe salesman. Then i could get a custom made foot arch for all my shoes.

I dunno if my shin muscles are underdeveloped but I've got pretty damn good sized calves.

Thanks for the advice.

I really wanna get running again even though I have always hated it but the pain just sucks. It makes me miserable and I'm seriously limping through the last stretch at times.

I think another issue might be my foot width. As I said, not flat but lacking an arch to a decent amount IMO.

A lot of shoes are just tight as hell on my foot.

Personal story: I was a competitive runner in high school, gradually gave it up through college. After college when I tried running recreationally, I started to get really bad leg pains, mostly in the shin/side of the shin area.

Anyway, I read up a ton and tried all sorts of things to fix it, because the pain was so bad I couldn't go more than a mile without stopping.

In the end, the combination that ended up working for me was getting toe socks (no, really), light/minimalist shoes, and changing my foot landing from a heel strike to a toe strike.

So now I can do easily over 10 miles a pop and feel no leg pain at all. It's a complete 180 from where I was initially.

Gotta say, my wife spends a TON of time on Yahoo for reasons I cannot understand. Due to the psycho garbage my wife tells me she reads on Yahoo, the last thing I would ever trust is anything Yahoo put out. That place is a freaking train-wreck of page view whoring. Due to that fact, a terrible place to be digging for information you would actually depend on.

Yeah...you could do that. Then you could wear whatever shoe you wanted...with a big uncomfortable arch placed in it that probably doesn't fit, because running shoes aren't designed to have arches placed in them. You could definitely do that.

Or you could save a ton of time, money, and comfort by going to a running shoe specialist and seeking the appropriate info about your foot and your gait (which doesn't require a Doctorate)...and buy a good pair of shoes based on their recommendation. because they actually know something about shoes ....which, after all, IS what we're looking for here.

Which makes more sense?

I had a custom arch before and no they are not balky but that is funny. Yes I have had good high end running shoes when i was in the military I use to run in New Balance before most people knew who New Balance where and you could not find them in a lot of stores. One of the best pair of running shoes I ever owned back in june of 89 I swear I put almost 200 miles on that pair before I had to replace them.

I had to go to an arch because i chipped a bone in my ankle and my ankle has never ever been 100% since the surgery better than it was but it has issues. I had a 5 year stretch where I wore the arches in everything including running shoes because of my ankle and yes even good high end running shoes.
