After one game is Austin ahead of Hurd?

Miles Austin is my favorite "underdog" or young player on the team. He just seems to be a hard-working, humble kid trying to make his mark in the NFL. I can't help rooting for the guy to continue improving and do something big.

Based on last night's game and ONLY last night's game, Sam proved himself with his chances, Miles did not. That said, it's still too early in the pre-season.

If Stanback converts on that chance he had in the endzone, he'd be right in the middle of this discussion too.

Hurd won Round 1, but this fight is going the distance ....

Honestly, why can't they just be used to fill the roles that we need them to fill. If we want to stretch the field in a 3WR set, Austin plays. If we are looking to methodically move the ball in a 3WR set Hurd plays. I know the depth chart will need to show someone in the 3 spot, but that is like saying that Julius Jones was the starter, when everyone knew MBIII was getting the most carries... it's a formality.

If I had to choose though, I'd take Hurd. Speed from a WR is overrated IMO.

I totally agree. I thought Austin was going to blow Hurd away but so far, not so good. I think Austin is still thinking too much where as Hurd is finding zones and running crisp routes off of instinct now.

but he knows how to get open, and like you said, he catches everything thrown to him

Even on Kitnas INT last night Hurd blew past the corner but Kitna didn't put the ball in a good spot.



Sam Hurd has always been a guy who could make the acrobatic play and now he seems to look like he has taken himself to another level physically.

I was very impressed with him.

Im still on the Miles Austin waggon though too. Last night did nothing to change my mind.

It is looking like both guys are going to play a ton this year though.

Well if it's an honest, and serious, competition between the two for the #3 spot then you'd have to say, right now, that Hurd is in the lead cause of playing much better last night. But that was just one game and who knows what Austin may do over the course of the preseason. We'll have to wait and see but at this point I think Hurd would be ahead.

Tell it to guys like Joey Galloway, or Donte Stallworth. There is a longer list of receivers who had nothing but speed and failed, than there are guys who had nothing but speed and succeeded.

Tell it to Irvin, Rice, Charlie Joiner or Steve Largent. None of these guys were speed guys yet were big play makers and some of the all time greatest. Nothing wrong with a guy with outstanding speed but by the same token speed is not what makes a WR great.

I've never been a big Sam Hurd fan, mainly because of his lack of speed and he's rail thin. I'm hoping that Miles Austin is a factor because he can stretch the defense.

With that being said, Sam Hurd is a good football player. I was in Chicago for the game in 2007 where Hurd destroyed a db with a block on a TO reception that freed him for a big gain. He seems to get open when given the chance, he's a good st player, has good hands, and seems to work as hard as anybody. I'd like to see him stay healthy so we can see what he can do with a little experience. He's winning me over.

I don't know why people say the "after one game" line. Its not after one game. We have three years of evaluating these 2 guys. Everytime Hurd has been given the oppertunity to excell, he has done some. Is is very consistant. When the ball is thrown to him I expect him to catch it. His only draw back is he is not a burner.

I like Austin, but I am just not confident in his ability catch the ball consistantly. There have been many times this board has said....well if he only caught that ball he would have been gone for 6. Austin drops more big play balls. The only thing he has going for him right now is his speed. Speed is uselss if you can't catch the ball when it is thrown to you. I hope his hands and route running get better.

But thats a pretty big thing. Hurd looked good against the Raiders 2nd stringers, but get him out here against 1st teams and the man just can't get seperation. He is painfully slow. Its a shame too, cause I like the kid, but I don't think he'll ever amount to much with his lack of speed.

1) Crayton is the #2. Neither Hurd or Austin are ready for that role.

2) Hurd and Austin are sort of a co-#3. Each has different strengths and weaknesses and I think both could be used as a #3 in different packages with different roles.

IMHO, both Hurd and Austin are capable of being starting WRs.
Austin had a step on Asumwhatever in the first drive that I thought should have got a PI flag. It's a good sign if he can beat maybe the best cover CB in the league deep in his first series.

Other than Hurd's obvious holding call to negate Choice's biggest run, he played a great game. WR depth is almost the least of our worries.

On the Kitna interception he (Hurd) had good seperation from the CB (first stringer) the ball could've been placed a little better, but overall just a great play by Huff (first stringer). There is more to getting open than speed...

got to agree with this.It appears that Romo has good chemistry with Austin too and they have a knack to connect on long plays.I will be watching during regular season to change my mind.

I didn't watch much of the 2nd half, but it looked to me that Austin played very little after the first team went out. And Hurd played very little with the first team.

So, no, I think last night shows more of what the coaches thing about the two.

But, again, I wasn't able to watch the game much due to work, so please correct me if I'm wrong in that regard.

I like what i saw of Hurd yesterday. I was hoping to see Austin on alot of deep balls but didn't seem to happen. The INT looked like Hurd could of got it but Huff made a good play.
