Agent's take: Cowboys likely to go on 2019 spending spree

With all that to do, why in the world would you pay Dak this offseason?

In fact, I'd use both years of franchise tags on Dak, too, in 2020 and 2021 if I had to.

I think they are planning on using the back to back franchise tag on Zeke and then letting him walk. Just hope he doesn't hold out like Bell.

Eh, you have money, spend the money. It does nothing just sitting around.

Glad to see the Cowboys have the cap space and ability to make some deals.

Dallas needs to focus on getting Tank and Cooper signed long term first of all. That will give us even more cap space.

Second, they need to sign a vet TE and S in FA.

Third, focus on the offensive and defensive lines in the draft.

Fourth, extend offers to Byron, Zeke and Jaylon. Getting them signed this summer would be fantastic.

I’d also let Beasley walk and cut Lee. I’d wait to give Dak an extension. Giving him big money prematurely could cost this team championships.

To me there aren't too many difficult decisions. Byron, Lawrence, Cooper, Dak and Zeke need to be re-signed. The rest don't really matter. There's a few nice to have players left there but none that can't be replaced by someone else in the league relatively cheaply. Maybe La'el Collins is the exception but I don't think his contract is particularly good value.

Yeah that's half the team and doesn't include Zeke. I think a whole bunch of these guys will be needing to get paid elsewhere.
Of course they will. That’s just how it works. That list isn’t even that bad. Zeke, Jaylon, Dak, Cooper Jones we already knew we were keeping. The rest of that list is mostly replaceable depth guy. We can find more cheap backup offensive linemen. We’re going to save a lot of money not paying Dak like Stanford or Rodgers. That’s at least 10 million in savings right there.

There’s only a couple of bubble guys

Collins - isn’t production/durable enough to break the bank for, if he doesn’t take a team friendly sea: deuces.

Sean Lee - LVE

Antwan Woods - need to see more but like what I see but he’s playing an undervalued position in our scheme. We’ll replace him before we respect him.

Anthony Brown- If he doesn’t take a team friendly Scandrick like contract I would let him walk. We can find another cornerback in the middle rounds. Awuzie and Lewis are still here when his contract is up.

Exactly his value has decreased.

But one thing our players are good for are having contract years. I’m through with that nonsense. If you wait 5 years to be productive I’m more often than not inclined to let walk. That’s how I felt about the Jason Hatcher situation when it happened and I’m glad the FO agreed with me

We have to pay Dak but it probably will not hit the salary cap hard until 2021. Assuming we sign him on a small base for 2019 and then restructure in 2020 as we've done often.

I think it will be more of an in-house spending spree and possibly one big addition (Earl Thomas). The Cowboys tried to get Earl for a 3rd round pick early this season and then increased their offer to a 2nd round pick at the last minute. The trade didn't happen & as we all know Earl broke his leg and can be seen cursing and flipping off the Seahawks bench. He's from Texas, played college ball for Texas, and is not hiding the fact that he wants to be a Cowboy.

The Cowboys have a top flight defense and in my mind only have one weakness (Safety). Earl is a perennial all-pro [even at his age] and plays with intensity and heart (a perfect match for what we have).

The only way Earl ends up anywhere else is if his asking price is too high. It will be interesting to see how it pans out, we have a ton of big name free agents hitting the block next year, so the Cowboys have to be careful with how they spend money. The window to win in the NFL is too short, I don't believe they'll pass up an opportunity to sign Earl!
While ET would be an improvement, the money and his age make me leery of signing him. You can talk all about the Texas connection and wanting to be a Cowboy, but he wants to get paid. He's felt disrespected by the Seahawks and wants to be paid like an elite S, he's not taking a hometown type deal to come here. While he might want to be a Cowboy, he wants to do it at the right price and using the Cowboys name is as much a ploy as anything. We have a lot of cap room, but we also have a lot of our own players, many with big money implications to make decisions on too.

Tank and Irving this year. Irving on a low guarentee and performance/time playing contract, sorta like a Sean Lee deal.
2020 the big 3 on offense Elliott, Dak, and Amari. Byron Jones should get a nice payday too. Lee could walk and Collins is replaceable. Gonna need to draft an OT high this year.

Tank, Jones and Smith are extension guys and should get done. I would prefer to extend our guys on second contracts and have no cap room for the first week of FA if that's what it comes to. IMO, second contracts for proven studs is good business and if the Cowboys can't do this with the ever rising cap and loads of cap space then I have no clue what the FO is up to...

I think Irving will be an easy resign. He doesn't play so he won't get paid, lol.

Hopefully the Cowboys extend a bunch of guys, draft well, and stop pushing back the cap charges on existing contracts.

Restructuring is how we got into salary cap hell

Here's what I would do.........the QB tag for 2020 will likely be in the range of $25 30M. I would offer 100% guaranteed 3-year $75M deal. This way we're not stuck in a long-term deal. Dak gets his pay-day with another shot in 3 years at only 27-28. We also save a little $$$ rather waiting until 2020 when the tag will likely be closer to $30M for QBs. Just me but this seem to make sense for both sides.

I would not do that.

The only reason to pay earlier is if Dak will take a very team friendly deal, big time hometown discount. If he gets elite QB money it will sink the team.

This is so true. We can argue all day if Dak is a good QB or not but I think everyone would agree he isn't elite QB. Not the type that can carry a team. If he takes a reasonable deal that is one thing. But you cannot break the bank for this guy. It would destroy the team. Cowboys can find another QB elsewhere.

For the record I wouldn't even consider resigning him unless its on the cheap. But I get that Cowboys are going to resign him. Just have to hope the front office does not over pay.

So. From the looks of.
Cowboys can't break the bank this year as next year there are going to be a lot of players to resign.

Yep ... all those championships in the past 23 years !!!

Tank and Coop are my top priorities, going to have to continue to have strong drafts.

I really think ET will be the only FA signing of note. Everything else is going to current players

I'm hoping a Tight End is brought in as well. TE Jesse James from Pittsburgh would be a nice addition.

Dallas could go for best player available in the 2nd round
