Agent's take: Cowboys likely to go on 2019 spending spree

With all that to do, why in the world would you pay Dak this offseason?

In fact, I'd use both years of franchise tags on Dak, too, in 2020 and 2021 if I had to.

Agreed on this offseason, would be hesitant on franchise tags though without seeing his play next season....probably moot considering Jones seems hell bent on doing it now. Resigning should not be "top 5" money if they go that route...at least it better not be....

So we are going to pay him 30 million a year? The Franchise tag is supposed to be top 5 qb money. Pay him an Andy Dalton type contract, have a team out. I would actually pay him next offseason. I would like to pay Zeke first if possible. Get him at Gurley type money and spread it out over 5 years. Pay him before You have to so the back end of his contract won’t be horrible to digest.

Agent's Take: Cowboys likely to go on spending spree during 2019 NFL offseason
Owner Jerry Jones has exercised restraint the last few years, but that will change in the offseason

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has exercised fiscal restraint over the last couple of years. Things are about to change in Dallas during the upcoming offseason. His check book is going to open wide.

Jones announced his intention to give quarterback Dak Prescott a new deal hours after a home loss to the Titans on "Monday Night Football'' earlier this month. The 2016 fourth-round pick becomes eligible for a contract extension once the regular season ends on December 30. Signing wide receiver Amari Cooper, who was acquired from the Raiders for a 2019 first-round pick as the late October trading deadline approached, to a new contract reportedly is an offseason priority. Pro Bowl defensive end Demarcus Lawrence also has an expiring contract.

Check out 2019 and 2020 list of our own free agents .........2020 is the monster. I'm guessing they will use 2019 to try and get some of the 2020 signed.

I really think if we are smart we won’t have cap issues. You have to remember the cap goes up by 10 million a year at tut has over the past 7 years. All the guys who are UFA their current cap numbers are also coming off the cap. We are going to have Browns and 49 erntyoe cap room. Keep grinding with good draft picks and don’t overpay for a non franchise Qb. That formula has never worked.

Because there are no strings attached. I don't want to be married to this guy long term.

Honestly, after next year, I don't think he's going to be worth much. Probably could have him for a song by then.

(I don't think he'll ever see a franchise tag.)

2019 keep Lawrence and everyone is expendable:
2020 Sean Lee, Hurns, Health, Showers, Brown, and probably a few more can/has to walk!
Just have to draft now

As noted the past few years.....this coming offseason is one where Dallas will likely dole out some big contracts just to keep above the floor and retain core players. Don't be surprised if we dip into the free agent market heavier as well. There is a ton of cap to spend.

And remember we tried to pay Sammy Watkins...
Gonna be interesting to see what direction they go to of they dont make moves in FA. ET seems they most obvious since there was very real mutual interest over the offseason and a connection to Richard. Im interested in seeing where else they spend money

So we are going to pay him 30 million a year? The Franchise tag is supposed to be top 5 qb money. Pay him an Andy Dalton type contract, have a team out. I would actually pay him next offseason. Many have argued he will only get something in the $15M range. No way in hell sign that, knowing he's only one year away from free agency or 2020 $25+ tag. IF they can get him to sign for an average of $20M next year......it would still be cheaper than waiting until 2020.

Byron is still under contract next year.

Demarcus is really the only one that's expensive and a must sign in 2019.

I'd re-sign Fleming and give Irving a cheap deal.

With both Byron and Amari under contract next year, hopefully we can extend them.

I'd be looking at ET and Bennie Logan (even though we hate FA interior DL apparently, but he'd help).

Cap looks great. We're $125mill under in 2020 right now. We're fine.

Sure about that? You know the tag for 2020 and 2021 will likely be $25 -30M......

Yeah, the way QB salaries are escalating, I think I probably agree with you. I would try to negotiate a two year deal with an optional 3rd year and see if I could set up a prove it type contract. It's smart to give him more money then what he is currently earning but I don't think I would pay him stupid money, based on what you see now. Now, if he were open to a very reasonable long term deal, something like what Tyron agreed to (obviously not the same money), then I might do a long term deal with Dak. The thing about it is that if you pay a QB a lot of money, you kill your cap and you end up fielding a lessor team. Does anybody see Dak winning with guys who really aren't as good as what he has now? At this stage in his career, I don't.

We have over 75m in easy Cap Space next year and the cap will be over 200m in 2020

Because the franchise tag for Dak would be over 25M in 2020 and then you gotta pay him 120% of that (30M) the following year.
The more reasonable approach is pay him now and get the discount then spread out his cap hits.

What discount? Dak will want top 5 money on a long term deal so the most reasonable approach is to make him play out the final year of his rookie deal which is actually a real discount. Then plan to franchise him the following year. That will give you two more years at an average of $14-15 million per year to evaluate him and determine if he is worthy of the kind of deal he will want. I like Dak and think he is a solid football player but I still don’t know if he can be the QB of a team that wins the super bowl. I’d like two more years to come try an gigure that out before paying him and committing big money for a long time.
