Aggressive Play Calling

One thing that jumped out at me this game was the aggressive play calling well into the third quarter with a significant lead. Spread receiver sets, down the field throws, etc...

I was sooooooooo happy to see the OC not go into a shell and call the same 'ol conservative crud and let the opposing team back in the game. We went for the jugular, executed the calls and played to WIN.

Ahhhh.... so nice to see.

Garrett was pretty much crucified for doing exactly what you are talking about in 2011 against Detroit. Not saying I disagree, just placing some historical perspective.

Well he did say excute the plays. Why it didn't work against Detriot because Romo kept throwing ints and the offense let them run em back for a td. Doesn't work if you give the ball right back to the opponent

One huge difference yesterday was the tempo and lack of audibles.

We didn't spend the whole game audibling and snapping it with 1 on the playclock.

Which makes me wonder if some of the offesive problems were a little more on Tony's audibles and a little less on "Garretts playbook sucks"

It helped that Murray had a couple of very good runs to open up the 2nd half, keep doing that and those bigger plays down field will happen more often.

I think alot of it had to do with how the OL played. This team has weapons the OL allow us to use those weapons to their fullest. If we block the offensive system will work.

Their were some nice running lanes and there was good pass protection.

I do not think our running game was as proficient as this one. We were shooting it out with Detroit. This team is still a pass first team.

I was gonna post this very thing.

Garrett's playbook still sucks when there is no balance because of the lack of creativity with the routes.

If you're going to be so pass happy you can be that basic against 2 high safeties and expect to get anything done with consistency.

In order for his offense to work we have to run with success because it's just too easy to defend.

Audibling and tempo are also a big part of the problem.

and when this team can do that they have the talent to win. Many who cover the game have said time and again Dallas has talent and if this OL starts opening running lanes and giving Romo some protection this talent will come to life.

I couldn't agree more. I was thinking the same thing watching the game yesterday. Was very refreshing!

So the playbook sucks when there is no balance, but is good when there is a running game. That could probably be said of many teams. When you come up with an offensive philospohy and create a playbook you would not create one with the idea that you will have trouble running the ball and try to find one that works on just passing alone. And if you beleive in the philosophy and playbook that you have, you dont scrap it because your rebuilding an offensive line and struggling to run. You keep at it until you have the players to execute it and the players buy into it.

Also, keep in mind that if Romo is audibling from run to pass that does not mean that Garretts playbook or offense is pass happy by design.

No he let Romo keep passing it. In fact, it seems like he put everything on Romo to win that game. This time was different because Romo had a running game.

We've never been committed to running the ball so we should have a playbook that is a little more creative instead of everything being so bland and basic with no tempo.

We don't try and create mismatches or confuse the defense in any way. We just line up and hope we can out athlete every team in the National Football League.

I don't want to go off on a rant because im in such a good mood but the way we have called games is a joke and hopefully it's in the past.

For the most part, others have argued that Garrett tries to get too creative with the x and o's and different route options and that we have so much talent we should keep it simple and out athlete the other teams.

Thats fine. Not trying to get you to go on a rant. I just dont agree with your assessment.

In the chat yesterday, every second-half pass play was followed with a chorus of, "Why are we abandoning the run?" posts.
