Yep...I have said it many times but I bet Goodrich was even shocked he was picked at that time.:laugh2:

I actually saw several draft sources that had Goodrich as the 2nd or 3rd best CB in the draft that year. Everyone was all over the place on CB evaluation -- a sure sign that the group stank.

Honestly, it wasn't scouting so much as just a horrible year for CBs all around. Tons of teams took CBs who did nothing. That draft was all about a GM who got locked into looking for a certain position.

The real kicker to me was that after the draft, we traded away Kevin Mathis b/c we thought there would be no room for him. Mathis had a couple of good years in NO after that. So we ended up getting rid of the one guy who actually could have helped address the position.

This was just as much a case of poor scouting as it was Jerrah being desperate. There is no way that Goodrich should ever have been considered a second rd or even third rd pick.

re the poor scouting, I think Mario turned out much better than what we thought.

Aside from being cornerbacks, all three of those guys had something in common coming into the draft -- all three had had brushes with the law when they were in college.

A few years later, one (Larrimore) had set a record for fines and another (Goodrich) had killed a couple of guys.

Drafting for need was part of the problem, but ignoring the off-the-field red flags was a bigger issue, IMO.

Goodrich was considered a second/third round pick before the draft. He sucked as a pro but it is the nature of drafting business. It was a bad year for CBs. Only two went to first round and five in the second round. The only one who made pro-bowl was the first DB selected (Delta O'Neal). Yes, Goodrich pick sucks but who else we could have drafted? I mean, every CB drafted in 2000 sucked expect Delta O'Neal.

Larrimore/Edwards were second-day picks and you can not expect too much from them. In fact, Mario actually played like a good third-rounder (average starter).

THis year is a totally different year. I am all for drafting CBs.

Goodrich was a good example of how just being productive as a college player isn't enough. He simply wasn't a good enough athlete to cover NFL WRs.

You almost have to have elite athleticism to be a quality NFL corner.

Of course, Goodrich was a lot worse than that.

I, too, feel we gotta draft a "top-rated" CB whether we get Pac-Man or not. And iffin we don't get Pac-Man, certainly, two CBs and maybe even a safety.

But, beware the Ides of March and the hot air of April.

of course, tearing an Achilles before his 2nd year didn't help matters

My, seems like only yesterday.
Of the bunch, Mario Edwards was the star. The other two were just standbys and one a speed racer.

So, anybody for drafting a bunch of CBs this draft!!!
:)

OK, OK, maybe a cautionary tale, if someone can describe it to Prairie Flower.
Maybe admiration for a gutsy call by Jerra to go all out for secondary help.

And can anyone tell me what the hay happened to Martens?

My wife is an officer in Farmer's Branch and I am going to have her arrest and then mace you:)

This was seriously cruel.

Here is Goodrich bio before draftL

"Goodrich came to Tennessee from H.L. Richards High School in Chicago. Goodrich had been an All American at defensive back, while also running track. Goodrich was a three year starter for the Vols, earning a spot as captain during his senior season in 1999. Goodrich became noteworthy after the 1999 Fiesta Bowl. Goodrich was assigned to cover Florida State Seminoles WR Peter Warrick. In the 2nd quarter of that game, Goodrich intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. The play helped the 1998 Tennessee Volunteers football team win the game and the National Championship. Goodrich was the defensive MVP of the game."

Yes, he sucked as a pro but his career was cut short due to his legal problem.

The only thing "cut short" was the lives of the two men he killed.

No apostrophe in Farmers Branch. So I hope this was a cruel trick on your part and she's not really coming after me.

I tell you what, I've been maced more times than Pac-Man and Michael Vick's little brother combined, so I am getting immune to mace.

I remember seeing Goodrich and Mario Edwards names in the draft guides as our potential 2nd round CB draftee.

I was surprised to see Edwards still available in the 6th round. Shows how much the draft guides know.

Exactly.

On the topic at hand I was actually kind of a fan of Flowers. I thought for some brief flashes he seemed like he was on the verge of getting it. It just never happened.

It shows the mistakes that can come of drafting for NEED. Every team has needs. So, should be draft DMac, or a nickleback and second tier RB.
