Scientists say they have found a way to disarm the AIDS virus in research that could lead to a vaccine. Researchers have discovered that if they eliminate a cholesterol membrane surrounding the virus, HIV cannot disrupt communication among disease-fighting cells and the immune system returns to normal.

Scientists have discovered that HIV needs cholesterol, which it picks up from the first immune cells it infects, to keep the virus' outer membrane fluid. That allows it to communicate with - and disrupt - the body's immune system.

The long-term effect of this disrupted communication is to destroy the body’s normal defense against the AIDS virus, which is responsible for 1.8 million deaths each year.

But researchers say they can prevent HIV from damaging the immune system, if they remove the cholesterol from the virus’ outer membrane.

David Graham is a molecular biologist at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.

“By stealing cholesterol from the envelope of the virus, we can neutralize the subversion," said Graham. "We’ve broken the code; we can shut down the type of interference that HIV is having on the immune system.”

So we could possibly have an AIDS vaccine, possibly a cure for cancer, and possibly just found a particle faster than the speed of light.

Nice work!

Actually just read another story about Aids as well. Scientists have been trying to figure out the structure and protein of Aids for years:

The University of Washington has a computer game that they let students play with to make a 3-d structure of a cell.

They asked the students to give it a crack, and the students designed an accurate 3d model of the cell in just 3 weeks!

"A research paper published Sunday by the journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology details how online users of Foldit successfully mapped a protein-cutting enzyme from a particular AIDS-like virus found in rhesus monkeys. This enzyme helps the virus spread and counteracting it relies on mapping its exact molecular structure--a task that until now had been too monumental for scientists to accomplish."

Not to jack your thread, just thought it was a relavent discovery in recent weeks as well ;)

We have flying cars and skateboards... and thanks to Pink Floyd, flying pigs. ;)

Terrific news! I hope they can also come up with a sure fire cure for cancer and diabetes. I read something the other day that sounds real promising to treat alzheimers too.

I'm still skeptical about all these vaccines. I know how AIDS spreads, so that's why I wouldn't want a vaccine for it.

So removing the outer membrane of the HIV cell allows your T-cells to attack and destroy the HIV cell?

Sounds like a winner.

Vaccines in general. I'm not a fan of mandating them and especially putting the stamp of 100% effective on them when they cause other side effects. I wouldn't expect someone who pays to troll to understand (not you). But I think vaccines should be a choice for people.... not everything people are vaccinated for is needed.

The benefits of routine vaccination FAR OUTWEIGH the potential side effects.

I'm curious as to which vaccines you think are unnecessary.

I can agree with that, but at the same time, why not further the study, produce the vaccine, and give those that WANT it, a chance to get it.

I don't think that all vaccines are good either, but I won't stop others from their options. Case in point, the Guardasil shot. My DD's have NOT and will NOT get this until they are 18 and choose themselves. They are not sexually active, so no need at this time, not to mention it's (IMO) too new, and the potential long term effects aren't available to be studied.

You're the kind of person that makes doctors and future doctors like myslf want to mandate biological science courses to every high school and college student in America. It's embarrassing how little the average American knows about vaccines, what they do and how they work.

Nobody claims vaccines are 100% effective. The simple fact is however that vaccines are the number one reason for the incredible increase in average lifespan over the past 100 years. Vaccinations have withstood every test and angry tirade in that time and brought people kicking and screaming across the 75 year lifespan threshold.

I wouldn't expect anything less than a comment like this from an Aggie, wanna-be med student. History is the most important aspect of the vaccine debate. Nobody debated percentages yet, although I think some percentages are exaggerated or minimized to suit pharma and their profit agenda which is often tied to closely to lobbyists and Washington. But tow the typical Aggie line. Vaccines should still be a choice, but I know you guys aren't very good at making those. And towing the pharmaceutical line for Washington, like goats.

I'm not debating that some of the science isn't legit. But from a percentage standpoint, most people would be fine with much fewer vaccines. Some people have been flat out poisoned by them. And I do know of some research that points to early vaccines and autism.

But that's something I doubt you can back with anything other than than with Aggie schism.

Which vaccines are you referring to?
