This is my personal favorite for gauging how well the team is playing. I know that on the defensive side of the ball Rod Marinelli has stated that he doesn't care about the NFL ranking, he wants to know where the team is in the Aikman's and turnovers. It measures 7 different categories and produces a ranking for both offense and defense. In the first week of the season the team with more yards (NFL ranking) went 10 - 6, the team with the higher Aikman went 14 - 2.
Last year we finished ranked 5th overall with a 160.5, while the Broncos finished the regular season in first with a 164.5. We had the number 3 offense and number 15 defense last season.
This year, after 1 week we are ranked 14th overall with a 157.9. We're ranked so low because some teams had flukie high numbers for week 1 - the Jets had a 199.3. At the end of last year that 157.9 would have been good for the number 8 position.
Looking at the offensive and defensive numbers you have to feel pretty good about how our team played when you consider that we were -3 in turnover differential. If we had netted either of the near turnovers our defense caused, or had a couple of balls not bounced exactly right for the Giants D our efficiency on both sides of the ball would have been considerably higher.
We were middle of the pack in defense last year while netting the second most turnovers in the league with a score of 69.6, we finished the Giants game with a 70.1 - only marginally better. But that was without a single turnover in our favor. With the way we swarm and attack the ball I think we're going to get a lot of turnovers as the season progresses. And that should cause our AER to skyrocket. I'm still hoping for a top 5 finish on D in the AER.
Time will tell if our D or the Giants O was more responsible for the numbers, but considering the lack of turnovers I'd say our D is off to a great start.
