I'll never forget the press conference to introduce Barry when he got so excited he shook Jerry by the shoulders.

The dumbfounded look on Jerry's face was absolutely priceless. Jimmy must have been rolling. And Cowboy nation was embarrassed beyond belief.

I remember I wanted to craw under the couch.............and I was giving JJ the no.1 sign for hiring him.:

Riddle me this Batman...

Why did Aikman retire from the National Football League. He did not sign with Cowboys for one day to retire a Cowboy.

I remember watching a late night talk show. Leno I think?

Aikman was on and the crowd roared when he was introduced. The look on his face was something like "whats wrong with these people=Losers"

I will never forget that. Lasting impression.

Yes, he loosened the reigns which led to the lack of discipline in the locker room and off the field. There was no leadership or a sense of discipline during Switzer's years. That was a team that was capable of winning at least another Superbowl and arguably two but thanks to his presence, the party never ended.

At OU, I give him credit for being able to recruit the best talent in the country. Of course, it made it easier on him that he used illegal means and didn't have to compete with any of the Texas schools since they were in a sepate yet much easier conference. It can't be too difficult to recruit Texas players when Switzer would remind them that the best they could hope for was a berth in the Cotton Bowl since their conference was so much weaker than the Big12 That was one of Switzer's famous lines when recruiting HS players from Texas.

i wasnt at all embarassed by switzers joy and enthusiasm about coaching the cowboys.
i have always felt troy was as much at fault for the cowboys troubles as switzer because he didnt show any respect for switzer...and since he was a "leader" the other players followed his lead.
and until i get a ncaa ring and a nfl ring i am going to just figure switzer
was a better coach than i am.

Yeah, it was Troy's fault for not respecting Switzer. We should just assume he knew how to coach a pro-style offense since he used the wishbone and option his entire collegiate career. I'm sure Jerry hired him based on his brilliant strategic mind as opposed to his long term friendship. And when Switzer was fired, there were so many teams that were just begging for his services because after all he won an NCAA and a Superbowl. What was Troy thinking?

hey switzer had assistants..just like every other coach in the nfl.
troy didnt like switzer before he ever got here...you gotta admit that.
he could have just done his job and not griped about it.
most of switzers players loved him and still do.
sorry i spoke evil of Aikman..i realize thats not a way to win friends
and influence people.

Aikman had a problem with Switzer going back to his days at OU. Aikman broke his leg and Jamelle Holloway took over. Switzer changed his offense to the wishbone and never looked back (I think they won the national championship that year if I'm not mistaken). After that Aikman had to transfer to UCLA and lose a year of eligibility. No wonder he never trusted Switzer after that.

so when did irvins problems begin?

when did the white house begin?

north dallas 40? long before any of 'em.

people are really fooling themselves if they feel a team full of "kids" (at the time) won a superbowl and didn't "party".

How did this thread turn into a Switzer critique when it started out about Aikman and quoted him after the '92 season? :)

He still thinks his concussions and back injury had nothing to do with his retirement. He says he retired because he was frustrated with the Cowboys being such a mess. I guess he forgot that we cut him and nobody else wanted him, either, so he had to retire.
Hell, he's only said about a 1,000 times he had to quit because of his back.

Jamelle Holloway was the best wishbone quarterback I ever saw play.

That's not what he said in Sports Illustrated -- "The misconception is that I retired because of (injuries). I retired primarily out of frustration. Our organization was in disarray and had lost focus. I didn't see that turning around."

1989 drained the life out of him. I never saw a guy beat up as much as Aikman was that season.
I'd say David Carr beats him. He's been beaten up for 4 years now.. Atleast Aikman got a break from his beatings. :)

I am one that thinks Aikman is negative toward us, but I think Aikman gives credit where credit is due and doesn't when it isn't deserved. So far, the Cowboy games I have seen that Aikman has covered the boys were deserving of very little praise.

Since we are talking about the Switzer days...

when the patriots can only eek out last second wins despite having such "genius" coaching, how good were the Cowboys winning a Super Bowl and coming close on another with a head coach that didn't coach. That's how dominant the Cowboys of the 90s were, I guess.

The man won a superbowl and got to the NFC championship game his first 2 years so yeah that was the worst move Jery ever made  . GEEEEEEZZ

Well he took over a team built by Jimmy Johnson that was THAT good. He got outcoached by Switzer in the SB, and Neil O'Donnell and Dallas' overall talented bailed him and us out.

The guy really wasn't a good NFL coach. Period.

It's like saying Trent Dilfer is a great QB because he won a SB. Sure I give him credit for not ****ing up, but he definately wasn't the reason Baltimore won it all that year. Just 'cause you don't **** up, doesn't mean your good. Barry just barely didn't **** up.

And how many do you think he would've won if he was hired in '89 instead of Jimmy? Can you say zero?

Switzer inherited the back to back defending champions. He brought nothing to the table. Jerry just wanted to prove that any of 500 coaches could win with that team. He was right. But not many could've gotten them there in the first place or kept them contending for years. But instead of trying to find someone to help the team improve, Jerry let his ego ruin the franchise.
