XMPP will replace it and Yahoo too soon enough. Whether it be GTalk or some other tool. They will all use XMPP though.

I will say I'm surprised the current IM kings already took such a big hit like this. I suspected it would be at least another year or two.

==================================

For anyone inside the generation for which AOL was synonymous with the internet, and AIM was prerequisite to any social life at all, some pretty sad news: AOL just sacked its IM team. The old king of chat is paraplegic.

The NYT's Nick Bilton reports the mass canning:

The AOL Instant Messenger group took the deepest cut so far. A former AOL employee said the group was "eviscerated and now only consists of support staff." This person, who asked not to be named because they were not allowed to speak publicly about the company, added that "nearly all of the West Coast tech team has been killed."

Complete Story

I have an AIM, but I haven't logged in in years.

I still use Yahoo Messenger and Windows Live.

My job uses webex connect for IM, but we still use Windows Live too.

I remember when ICQ was the thing most people used.

I remember when ICQ was the only real instance messenger if you weren't using AOL proper.

I loved ICQ. Man I haven't thought about that service in years. :laugh2:

ICQ is still around and is also available for mobile too. There were a bajillion people using it back in the day.

Everybody at my job still uses AIM and I don't see us stopping anytime soon.

ICQ was the greatest thing until AOL bought them. Then the ICQ client became a bloated piece of advertising crap! It could take 30-60 seconds for the client to load.

This is what makes GTalk so great. It loads in like 1/10 of a second. It's small and compact with no advertising. Best of all, it uses an open protocol in XMPP. None of that proprietary crap!

Facebook has rendered AIM completely useless imo

yeah pretty much, facebook has chat now so AIM is redundant

yahoo messenger became filled with nothing but fembots and fillipinas trying to get husbands

I just text to people I want to "chat" with, no more messenger

Kids these days with their interwebs and rock and roll music :fogeys:

Facebook chat sucks.

We have a corporate messenger system, but I don't like the Big Brother aspect of it so I never use it. Most of us use AIM for work, too.

I still have an AIM account, and it signs on in tandem with my gchat account on my Mac, but I only talk to 1 person on there.

I've been trying to migrate to gchat fully. This might do it.

Google really needs to release a Gtalk app for Mac and Linux like they have for Windows.

The iChat/Messages client works fine enough. I like having it windowed.
