He's just trying to get the game over without injuries. So, then next time you see Alabama with a 50 point spread, take the points and make some money.

Lines like this one create a situation where you have to guess not if Alabama can cover, but if they want to. Alabama is notoriously atrocious against the spread when the line is so big. They completely take their foot off the gas in the 2nd half. From a gambling standpoint, Mercer was in complete control the entire game.

I disagree. There are a lot of rivalries in college that transcend record. Don't tell Army and Navy they "aren't playing for anything" when they meet in December just because each team is eliminated from the playoffs.

Furthermore, it is not an all-or-nothing situation. Teams play for conference championships and for bowl games. Winning a bowl game - the more prestigious the better - is a major accomplishment for many programs. Only a very small handful of schools can think about contending for the playoffs, but that doesn't mean everyone else is playing for nothing.
