And as I said, if they talked themselves into that, it's just further proof these guys don't get it and just aren't very good at roster construction.

But assuming they aren't complete idiots, the fact they added Cooks, restructured Gallup tells me that unless it's a CeeDee Lamb situation, they aren't going WR at 26. That doesn't mean they can't and shouldn't come back and take a WR later. I'd be all over a guy like Mingo in the later rounds, for example.
I think the real mistake here was giving Gallup that deal in the first place. I don't mind moving on quickly, but there isn't a WR in this draft I would take at 26 unless it's Smith-Njigba, and he doesn't play the same position.

I am generally curious now. Knowing what McCarthy apparently wants to do - play more 12 and 13 personnel - if all the TEs were there at 26, which WRs would you consider no brainer picks over all of those guys? Or would you take Kincaid, who is basically a glorified 4th WR, over the WRs and your only problem is with Mayer?
If McCarthy is going to incorporate more of the GB style of O it’s going to be more 11 personnel and 3+ WR sets.

Flowers, Addison and JSN are locks. Hyatt and Johnston are maybes.

I like Kincaid and Mayer just don’t think any TE in this class warrants a 1st round pick. Unless it’s a freak athlete with a monster catch radius i’d rather continue to draft / churn and develop mid rounders.

One, Gallup isn't having snaps eaten up unless he's still hurt. And if he's still hurt then it was really dumb for the Cowboys to restructure him last month. So the fact they did it tells me health wise, he's fine.

If you have a WR rated the same as Mayer (or Washington or Kincaid) at 26 and you take the WR, that's insane to me. Mayer is likely an immediate starter and will play 700+ snaps a year. Your WR might play 175 snaps his first two years until you clear out one of the WRs in Lamb, Cooks or Gallup, which likely isn't happening for at least 2 seasons.

I get it that some of you like the flash and glitziness of skill players but looking at it logically, WR is one of the lower needs at 26 given the current team make up.
Yeah we've heard all year that the media scouts were higher on the WR group then the NFL scouts and I believe that 100%. I'd take 3 of the TEs before the first receiver of this group. The combine confirmed this is a smallish and unathletic group this year. Expecting a rookie WR to have a major contribution in year one is asking a lot. Asking a rookie WR who's also 5'9 180lbs is like asking for gold. There isn't a WR in this draft that would take snaps away from Cooks or Gallup.

Stephen just said that they'd have 15-16 players with a 1st round grade. That's not many and you have to figure out of those they probably have 5-6 DEs, 1 RB, 1 DT, 2-3 QBs, 3-4 corners, 1 TE, and 4-5 OTs. There is a very good chance Dallas will be picking a player at 26 that they don't have a first round grade on because they are gone. It's a weak draft and it's the only reason we're talking these underwhelming wide outs at 26. All the interest Dallas has shown in the receivers class to me is more about who slips to the 2nd round rather than 26.

I saw one report that said if you paired this WR class with the one in the 2020 draft that had Lamb and Jefferson and Ayiuk and Jeudy, most of the guys in this draft would have 2nd round or lower draft grades. The level of talent just isn't there in this class. I don't see why you would force a pick at WR at 26 if there are similar players at bigger needs available.

BTW.....it's interesting how the media locked into Stephen's statement about Bijan.

https://www.nfl.com/news/cowboys-evp-stephen-jones-on-dallas-possibly-drafting-rb-bijan-robinson
I heard the comments by Stephen and came away thinking he didn't say a damn thing. He hemmed and hawed, restating Bijan had a good career at Texas over and over in different ways. At one point he said he is certain there will be a moment in the first round where Bijan is taken.

Way to go out on a limb, Little Anus.

Here's how we know. If they had wishy washy feelings on Gallup there is no way they would have restructured him kicking more of his cap hit into future years. If they didn't touch his contract a month ago, they could have cut him after this season with minimal pain. But now, because they restructured him, they can't cut him for at least two more seasons. They like Gallup and they want him around. You may not agree with it but their actions pretty much tell you that Gallup is a longer term player for them as opposed you thinking a guy taken at 26 is going to steal a bunch of snaps from him this year and then basically replace him in 2024.

We visit a lot of the top players, some we know we won't likely draft. Just because they've met with WRs doens't mean that's where they want to go at 26.

It's not roster building economics to now have that many resources tied up in the WR position. You spent a #1 on Lamb (and are going to resign him). You traded for Cooks. You have a lot of money tied up in the position. And then you are going to use another #1 pick on a WR that for, at least two years, likely won't play a ton (such as how much Lamb played his first two years). On a team that is very clear that they use the draft to find impact players, hopefully immediate impact players, taking a guy who, if everything goes right, would essentially be a bit player for a couple of years isn't solid roster building.

I would only take a WR at 26 if the board was just wasted and the WR was the clear BPA. Like with Lamb. But given this isn't a strong WR class at all, I have doubts that they are going to be looking at another Lamb situation.
I think they meet with a lot of the guys that are expected to go late in the first round (like Hyatt, Flowers, etc.) in case they slide some. IMO, they want to be prepared and know the player in case they fall down to (or near) their second round pick (like Diggs, who they thought of as a first round player).

I know they do that, particularly when they pick late in round 1.

It isn’t necessarily that they’re considering that player at their first round pick. They are preparing for every situation.

That is IMO.

I heard Broaddus talk about TE's yesterday, and he made a point I had not considered.

If Dallas were to go Darnell Washington, at 26, that tells you a great deal about their offense going forward. This guy, at one time, was thought of as a player who could transition to tackle. His blocking skills are stellar. Reading the "Needs Work," aspect of Washington, he isn't the fastest guy. But he breaks tackles.

The projection is 2nd or 3rd. But Broaddus implied he would go in the first.

I am not married to draft slotting. If the team is certain this guy will make the running game better, alongside of Martin and Steele, or Smith and Smith, the fact after the top 18 the first round drops off, taking a guy first offers an extra year before a re-up. I'm okay with that.

I believe the fanbase here has some idea that the 26th pick will bring in a real stud. I don't believe the draft is loaded like that.

While I believe the team needs an interior offensive lineman. And I have made no bones about O'Cyrus Torrence. I would be okay with Darnell Wright if he were there, were Torrence drafted before the Dallas pick. I am not high on Avila.

If all else fails, Washington would do. This team needs to rebuild to top of the fleet type line again.

Yeah, Stephen isn’t supposed to tell the media their draft plans. Of course he isn’t saying much.

Then, the media with their insatiable appetite for NFL news (particularly Dallas news), make a story out of Jones saying that he’s pretty sure Bijan will be drafted.

It’s nothing.

Yeah, the nut doesn't fall far from the tree. Stephen and Jerry can use 63 words to say absolutely nothing. Which is the normal for them. That comment by Stephen was like listening to a six-year old telling a story. I guess he couldn't hear me yelling at the radio to get to the point. And Broaddus and the guys at 105.3 were fawning over him.

I’m glad he does that and doesn’t tell them anything.

He’s saying “no comment” without being rude, lol.

By this time next week, the media will have Bijan at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport waiting for Jerry's limo......lol

Bijan is not worth it. No TB really is. To move up 7-8-9 slots to get him you are talking about dropping maybe your 2nd round pick, if there is an aggressive trade market, or at least your 3rd and maybe 4th round picks. Last year, KC traded the 29th pick, their 3rd round pick and their 4th round pick to move up to 21. So there's the starting price to go from 26 to the high teens.

To chase a TB in the first round.

Insanity. Especially for a team that claims they use the draft to fill multiple needs instead of spending a ton in FA. Of all the chatter about should they take a WR or TE or trade down or reach for a DT or take a TB at 26 and all the criticism that has come with the various suggestions people have made for 26, the absolute dumbest thing this team could do is trade away multiple picks to go chase a TB in the first round.
Right.

Because of the injury factor.

Say you givr away your draft to land Bijan, then he gets injured.

Fans would riot.

If the right WR is there I would in a heartbeat. If we’re talking about taking a similarly rated player to Mayer I would 10 times out of 10.

Your “4th” WR is going to eat away at Gallups snaps and ideally get us out of his salary and be our long term #2.
Thats why Im landing Johnston or Flowers.

JSN's injury history gives me pause so I'd pass on him even tho he's talented.

Johnston works for the WCO.

Fits right in.

Gallup is my favorite player...but its time to restructure or move on.

There isn't a worse scenario than the Cowboys trading picks to move up in the first for a tail back.
I tend to agree. Certainly if the other pick is their second. God no. A third would be much easier to stomach.

This board would be fractured between the guys who so badly want Bijan and those who don’t want to spend both picks on a RB… but then this board is usually fractured anyway…

I will say this about moving up for Bijan:

In 1990, Dallas needed a RB and knew there were a couple of teams who needed RB ahead of them (Atlanta and NY Giants).

Pittsburgh picked 17th and was willing to trade back, so Jimmy Johnson moved from the mid-20’s up to pick 17 to draft some guy named Emmitt Smith.

Atlanta, who wanted Emmitt, drafted RB Steve Broussard and NY took RB Rodney Hampton, lol.

So, if they have to move up to draft Bijan… do it with Pittsburgh at pick 17. That has good results.

Nothing says Dallas Cowboys like paying top of the market for your franchised RB and then trading several picks to move up to take another RB. Then again, nothing says Dallas Cowboys like "can't win in the playoffs year after year." If it ain't broke, why fix it?

The last time we traded UP for a player in the first round was for Mo Claiborne right?
Good Lord, that was BAD. I remember the 2012 Chargers game where little Danny Woodhead made him his B.
Also, that stadium was a DUMP, and I couldn't even sit in my own seat because there was a guy already passed out in it. A guy I met at the tailgate pushed somebody down like 3 rows, and there were multiple fights after the game. It was wild, but fun. lol
