I'm watching the all 22 footage from the Giants/Cowboys game because I want to see how much attention Dez was getting. These are only the passing plays:
1-10 - Dez covered by Jenkins with safety help over him. Terrance Williams is left 1 on 1 on the other side, Dak scrambles for 6 yards.
2-7 - Dez covered by Jenkins with safety help over him. Safety is floating back to protect against Dez deep so Beasley is open underneath the safety for 13 yards.
1-10 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins, never open, quick pass to the right to Witten for 7 yards.
2-3 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins, never open, quick pass to Butler on a slant which he drops.
3-3 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins, gets open to the sideline but Dak misses the throw.
2-4 - Dez goes over the middle on play action, has a defender over him and under him in zone, never open, incomplete to Beasley.
3-4 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins who falls to the ground. Safety goes to the other side of the field to help over the top of Beasley and Butler, Dez is wide open for a 55 yard TD and Dak never looks his way, complete to Beasley who gets 13 on a run after catch.
2-7 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins who is making illegal contact with him 15 yards down field, never gets open, hits Butler down the right side for 30 on a diving catch.
1-goal - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins, catches the fade but can't get 2 feet in. Jenkins also had his facemask and should've been flagged, but incomplete.
2-goal - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins, beats him easily on slant but Dak overthrows badly, incomplete.
3-goal - Dez comes across the field, Giants in zone. Play breaks down, Dez is open but Dak overthrows again, incomplete.
1-10 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins, beats him easily on slant and catches it for 8 yard gain.
1-10 - Dez not covered on the line, Giants in zone. Dez open over the middle of the zone D, ball targeted to Dez, tipped at the line, incomplete.
2-10 - Dez covered by Jenkins, a linebacker underneath, and a safety over the top. Terrance Williams catch on the other side of the field for 9 yards.
3-1 - Dez bracketed by corner and linebacker with safety help over top in zone, Terrance Williams catch on the other side for 2 yards and the first.
1-10 - Dez with Jenkins with safety help over the top, Dak tries to hit Dez on sideline but coverage is too good and throw goes out of bounds.
3-12 - Dez doesn't fire off the line, just kinda jogs a step or two as T Williams gets the WR screen on the other side of the field immediately.
2-17 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins who is playing way off, open on the curl but Dak goes to Beasley who is also even more open across the middle, but misses incomplete.
2-27 - Dez jammed at the line by Landon Collins, Jenkins is over the top. Ball goes to Witten for 11 yards before Dez could get deep.
3-16 - Dez covered by Jenkins with safety help, play looks like it's supposed to be a quick screen to Beasley, Dak looks at Dez who makes no effort off the line and is quickly sacked by Vernon.
1-10 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins, play action, doesn't get really open and Dak throws incomplete behind Witten over the middle.
3-6 - Dez in the slot, 4 different guys cover him at different points of the play, Williams goes across the middle for 23 yards.
3-2 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins, never open down the sideline, incomplete to Butler.
1-10 - Giants in zone, Dez open could've been 10+ yards but Dak went to Witten quickly for 4 yards.
2-4 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins, Dak goes to him, Jenkins called for defensive PI for 21 yard gain. Bad call IMO, but Jenkins got away with a lot more PI than this on other plays plus a facemask and illegal contact so whatever.
1-10 - Dez 1 on with Jenkins, great read by Landon Collins to not help with Dez and go underneath to stop Zeke who Dak went to for a 3 yard gain.
2-7 - Dez blocks Eli Apple for what might've been a screen to Beasley, instead Dak throws slant to Witten who is open for the TD.
1-10 - Dez covered by Jenkins with safety help. Williams catches for 14 yards.
1-10 - Dez given a huge cushion by Jenkins plus safety over the top. Witten catches it for 6 yards.
2-4 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins who gives a huge cushion, Dak completes to T Williams for 5 yards.
1-10 - Dez covered by Jenkins with safety help. Dak scrambles for 17 yards.
1-10 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins, open over the deep middle but Dak goes to Witten for 9 yards.
2-8 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins, Cowboys make Jenkins pay for the big cushion he's been giving, hits Dez for a 35 yard catch and run.
1-10 - Dez not on the field. Zeke catches it for -2, great play by LB Goodson to read and fly to it.
3-8 - Dez blocks for screen to Zeke who is lined up at WR, 1 yard gain.
2-6 - Dez covered by Jenkins with safety help over the top, Dez gets open on crossing route but Dak is under pressure and throws incomplete under to Witten.
3-6 - Dez covered by Jenkins with safety help blanketing him, Beasley makes the helmet catch for 7 yards.
2-7 - Dez covered by 4 different Giants in zone, Elliot catches underneath for 4 yards.
3-3 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins, comes off the line without effort because he knows the wheel route is going to Zeke the other way who gains 30 yards.
1-20 - Dez covered by Jenkins who releases him in zone to the safety, Dez beats the safety and is open for TD deep post but Dak throws incomplete to Williams on the sideline.
2-20 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins, seeing the huge cushion Dak throws up the ball for Dez, Jenkins gets away with a bad PI and Dez can't catch it 1 handed in the end zone.
3-20 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins, gets openish on the sideline but Dak throws incomplete to Beasley.
1-15 - Dez 1 on 1 with Jenkins, comes off the line lazily as he knows the play is a PA rollout to the right, Dak to Witten for 10 yards.
My thoughts after looking at each of these plays:
- Anybody who thinks Dez never plays in the slot is nuts. He was lined up in the slot in at least 1/3rd of these pass plays, they move him around.
- Anybody who thinks Dez doesn't command more than 1 on 1 is nuts. Yes Janoris Jenkins got Dez 1 on 1 a decent amount, but that's why he's paid like he is. Further, even when they had him 1 on 1, you can see in the defensive scheme it's only because they see the Cowboys in formations where they don't go to Dez deep as much. Any time it was a down and distance with a chance for a shot deep, he was bracketed with help.
- I saw only one time that Jenkins wasn't mirroring Dez no matter where Dez went. Giants gameplan accounts for Dez as the primary receiving threat for sure.
- Dez comes off the line too lazily on plays he doesn't think he has a shot at the ball IMO, but maybe that's how all #1 guys are. It stands out on the all 22 though.
- Dak definitely chose to go for more conservative higher % completions at times when he has a potential huge gain to Dez. Other times he just didn't see him because he wasn't the first read but he could've had a big gain.
- Dez takes TONs of attention from the defense, opening up the other guys. He's a big reason for nearly all of Williams and Butler's catches coming with them wide open.
- Dez could've easily had 2-4 TDs in this game alone if Dak had seen him/not overthrown the ball/Jenkins didn't get away with interference/the inches went our way just a bit more.
IMO Dez is not as good a weapon as Julio, ODB, Antonio Brown, Jordy Nelson, but anybody who forgets that the last 2 seasons Dez had with healthy QBs and without injury he averaged about 1300 yards and 13 TDs is in for a surprise this year. This is the same guy who went for 130 and 2 TDs in the playoff game, and I have a feeling we're going to see some humongous games from him this season.
Next week in Denver is against the only other passing D we'll play that's as good as the Giants, so maybe it's not then, but don't be surprised if against the Cardinals or Rams he explodes.
