All 22 film - how covered was Dez

I want Dak to throw it up for him on occasion. I trust Dez on contested throws. Learn that back shoulder throw that was indefensibly deadly with Romo.

Yeah, I'd like to see Dak let Dez fight for the 1 on 1 more often when he's down the sideline with the single coverage. Jenkins plays very physical and even if Dez doesn't catch it there's a decent shot at a PI call.

One thing that really stands out about Dak in the all 22 is how smart he is about down and distance and when to take shots. A lot of Dez's good deep opportunities were on stuff like 3rd and 2, 3rd and 4, etc. and Dak would choose to throw it just past the sticks to Beasley, Witten, etc. for a 1st down.

He knows that the big play is exciting but that keeping drives alive is crucial and those short throws to just move the chains get the job done. For as young as he is it's pretty crazy to me how well he seems to understand the game.

@xwalker assured me that Dez does not receive help and is treated by opposing defensive coordinators like he is a WR #2. He said that today.

I get the instinct to overreact as a fan sometimes, it's a big reason why I wanted to just watch every offensive play on the all 22 and really see what sort of gameplan the Giants used against Dez.

Looking at the all 22 it's immediately apparently how differently the Giants play coverage against Dez compared to Williams, Beasley, and Butler. Everything from having Jenkins mirror Dez every play to the safety over the top, to zones where there's 3 and 4 guys responsible for Dez on the same play.

A few posters assured me of that ........ and I told them BULL

They did not have a safety over the top of Dez last night. Jenkins had him alone all night.

He was single covered almost the entire game.

Yeah, that single coverage on Dez really opens everyone else up, thank the lord.

........... Bull

Thanks for the play-by-play breakdown.

Guys like Julio, AB, etc. play different schemes with different purposes and concepts. This game was the most I've ever seen Dez play in the Y. He almost always plays in the X and year-after-year runs the most 9 routes of any WR in the league. And that's with a team that doesn't throw that much since 2014. And #2 in terms of the amount of 9 routes in the league is T-Will. And prior to Dez...T.O. and Miles Austin were league leaders in amount of 9 routes ran in a year.

We are a scheme that wants to get about 50/50 split in run vs. pass plays. These days going 50/50 is like going 55/45 run/pass back in the 90's.

So we run a ton of 9 routes to stretch the field vertically to help open up the run game and get 7 in the box instead of 8 or 9 in the box. Whereas players like Brown, Jones, etc. are in offenses designed to get them the ball particularly in open space quite frequently. There was a particular play that we had where Dez ran a route that took 3 defenders with him and Beasley took 1 defender and I think it was Witten took another player and then T-Will delays his route and runs a slant underneath and Apple gets lost in the wash and T-Will is wide open and runs for a huge gain. AB and Julio will sometimes serve the same function as Dez did on the play (carrying 2-3 defenders with him to get another WR open), but the key difference is that often times they play the role that T-Will plays (gets open underneath on a play clearly designed for them). That's rarely the case for Dez.

Great post. I often wondered why Dez runs so many 9 routes when I feel like his strengths are more like a T.O., running crossing routes and getting the ball in space for YAC, but your post gives some context I don't always think about. Come to think about it, when T.O. was here I always wondered why we didn't use him on more crossing routes too. =D

I have a problem with it when he's against a CB like Josh Norman who is strong, but lacks speed. The Eagles showed how you go after Norman...you set him up and then get him in off coverage against a fast WR and then either run a 9 route or a skinny post. If he's playing man and pressing you can get him on a lot of hitches and eventually get him on a crossing pattern. You want to attack his lack of speed (4.7 forty time). But with Dez who is about 4.6 forty time you're just not going to get that separation. But we just continue to play to Norman's skillset and hope that T-Will, Beasley and Witten can pick up the slack and Dez wins a few jump balls.

I've said it before but Dak is not a gunslinger and he is not currently an elite dynamic quarterback. He is a very good game manager who has mobility as an added dimension.

24 touchdowns in a season isn't going to win many Super Bowls. He has played the Giants three times and has 2 touchdowns against them...

Both Bronco CB's were 1st Team All Pro so I don't expect a lot of long balls.

I think Dez will be doing a lot of blocking but I agree we will see big yards from him during the two games that follow the Broncos.

I've noticed Dak does have more success with medium/long range passes to Dez than the quick strike/slanting stuff. Dak and Dez might need more time working together, but against the Giants this Sunday the missed quick strike passes where Dak knows he's going to Dez and takes the snap and just fires it over there and the pass is high & off target were what most people remember about Dez in the game.

Except if you look at Brady and Rodgers, these games are outliers.

Rodgers had 40 touchdowns last year. Brady had 28 in 12 games (good for 37 for a full year). That's compared to 24 Dak had last year.

Am I convinced that he is going to outpace himself compared to a few veteran QBs that had mild mannered games?

Nope.
