Not just rookies. I even think Sean Lee needs to get stronger.
If you pay attention to any linebacker, even the best, you'll see they get pushed around on constantly. They're smaller and aren't playing with leverage when a lineman gets to them. The key is whether they can shed or avoid the block without getting locked onto.

I know but there is difference from getting pushed aside and getting pushed around like a rag dog. If you are limited physically, you can still be physical by getting stronger. Being strong doesn't necessarily mean being big. Strength will help with shedding blocks at the point of attack. During a run play, you don't always have open spaces to avoid blocks completely.

I don't think you'll get many - if any - flags for a push off on that play. He pretty much just swatted away Claiborne's attempt at trying to get a hand on his shoulder pad.

If that level of contact is impermissible then Morris would be just as guilty of illegal contact, and you'd have a flag on nearly every single passing down.

Edit: May have posted this in the wrong thread.
The WR got his hand on the front of Claiborne's shoulder and extended his arm straight out. It's the extension of his arm that makes it illegal. Yes, that might not always get called, but the WR doesn't get separation without it.

I too watched the coaches film and I can't believe you think Wilcox played well in this game. The dude makes so many mistakes. Why is he back peddling 35 yards away from LOS when it's a run play? All the defenders in front of him are running towards the ball carrier yet he is still back peddling. What the heck is he looking at?

He over runs plays repeatly. It's obvious he doesn't spend much time in the film room because his play recognition skills are really bad.

True that.

We've got TE's running rampant in the end zone and Wilcoxs' name all over it.

He hasn't improved at all, IMO.

So how many catches and yards did he give up to the TE in that game?

Finally got around to reviewing the all-22 and I'll give my thoughts.

Hitchens was pretty solid in the game. He could be stronger, but the game is not too big for him. He seems to read things fairly quickly for being a rookie. He runs well enough.

To be honest I'm a little disappointed in Melton so far. He gets blown out in the run game, sometimes not even on double teams. He does at times get some push in the pass rush. They need him to play better.

I like Bishop. He is pretty raw but I could see him becoming a starter quality player. Same way I feel about Hitchens. Of course Hitchens isn't as raw.

I thought Wilcox played all right. I think he still has a chance to be a good player. He is physical and aggressive. He needs to work on coverage, but physically he's capable. Not disappointed with him at this stage at all.

OK. On the whole cornerback thing, Claiborne after review wasn't as bad as I thought. Carr got picked on a few times as well. Had a few passes been on target, Carr could have easily been the goat of the game. He was beaten. The quarterback just didn't hit the receiver. Also, Carr gave up a few passes of the 20-yard variety. I think putting Scandrick in for Claiborne in base makes sense, because Scandrick is a better tackler, better against the run, etc. That is important in this scheme. However, Claiborne IMO is still a pretty solid cover corner and capable of turning into a good player. (he has excellent quickness to break on balls he just has to see things faster I think). I have most confidence in Claiborne covering an elite receive above Scandrick or Carr. I'm sure many may disagree. Anyway my point, not time to give up on Claiborne at all I think. It will be interesting how it plays out. We need him to play well. Carr and Scandrick are not shut down corners.

I like Crawford and interested to see him play on the inside.

With a defense that pursues well. Murray sometimes needs to find cutback lanes. He didn't always do that well in the game. As the game went along he had a few good cutback runs.

I think Randle while physically less impressive than Murray has good instincts for finding the right hole. I would like to see him continue to get chances. The sample size is small, but he just seems to have a knack for running to the right place.

If I had a dollar for every time someone said a rookie needs to get stronger.

Their rookies need to get stronger, there are 8 rookies on the roster. I just made you $8, enjoy your lunch today it's on me.
