I watched some of their games and when they played single-high Safety, James was in the box.

He was terrific in the box area in college and compared to other box type Safeties he was great in coverage; however, if comparing him strictly to Free Safeties he would not have been rated as a mid 1st round pick.

Any snaps he takes as a deep Safety are wasting the part of his game/skillset that is truly elite.

It would be like playing the early years Roy Williams as a single-high deep Safety.

They got an All Pro player so they did alright regardless of "value" because some 1st round picks don't pan out; however, at draft time it was easy to see why James was drafted later than projected by fans/media.
 
Yeah I am not as appalled by Gurley over Zeke as some here.

Gurley averaged more yards per carry, more yards per reception, 17 rushing TDs (to Elliott's 6) and 4 receiving TDs (to Elliott's 3 - so a wash).

Now surely, one can argue that Gurley has the benefit of a better coaching staff that is more creative in getting him the ball but the fact is Gurley accumulated those stats so I can't really sit here and say he's undeserving.

Chargers blogs say otherwise. He has played a lot in the box and also played some slot CB and even edge LB in certain packages but the most snaps have been logged as a deep safety. He's the new breed of S............. a guy that can be used interchangeably and not be locked into the old school SS versus FS alignments. He can blitz, play run support, defend deep, etc.

Against the Rams Week 3, he played mostly high safety. Against Seattle, they actually had him down on the line a lot to spy Wilson.

He's a legit stud in this league and can play a variety of roles very well on defense.

The one year he didn't 1st team he still made 2nd team which is crazy.

5 years into the NFL and he's 5x pro bowl, 4x NFL top 100, 5x all pro, and is a lock for 1st team all Decade.

He's only 28 years old and already has those stats. He doesn't get a ton of attention from cowboy fans/media due to the position he plays but he's a borderline generational talent.

I completely agree. He's on pace to be as good as Larry Allen.

I wonder if Von Miller hadn't been considered a linebacker (in addition to an edge rusher) would Jaylon Smith have made it?

It’s very close; two great players who had great seasons.
With his second straight first team all-Pro at age 24, Gurley is sneaking into Hall of Fame consideration. One more selection and he’s got a great shot and two more is basically a lock (greater than 90% of RBs with 4 first team All-Pro selections are in the Hall). But they are tough to get, so who knows.
 
I will take Zeke over Gurley anyday,playing vs NFC east and producing is way different and harder than the west and Zeke is a much tougher dude.

First of all, how does one measure "toughness"?

Rams faced more Top 15 rushing defenses as we did:

Rams - Chargers, Seattle (x2), San Fran (x2), Saints, Lions, Vikings, Eagles, Bears (10 games)
Cowboys - Seattle, Eagles (x2), Panthers, Saints, Houston, Colts, Detroit (8 games)

Top 10 defenses faced:

Rams - Chargers, Saints, Lions, Bears, Eagles (5 games)
Cowboys - Saints, Lions, Eagles (x2), Texans, Colts (6 games)

Not sure arguing that Gurley faced an easier slate for running is valid here.

Do me a favor. Go to your local gym and strap a 45 lb plate on your head. Then run around awhile and tell me who got the tougher yards.

Agreed.

Gurley has only 9% less yards from scrimmage for the entire season then Elliot but had 12 more touchdowns........ (it's okay if you think Elliot should of gotten the nod but you can't exactly say Gurley got it undeserving)
