They got beat by 3 TDs just like we did :) .

Regardless, if you have Tony Romo, then you will always have a chance.

It happens. Not an excuse for our defense they played poorly and I expect better out of them. I was proud of them when they came up with the big stop after we burned our last timeout. I knew a Det 1st down would end the game but the defense got the job done giving us 1 last drive to win the game.

Pittsburgh has probably been the most consistent this year.

That gadget play that Brady threw to Moss who threw it back to Brady who threw it to Gaffney was a back breaker for the Steelers.

I totally agree and was about to post the same topic. NFL has become an offense-happy league. Steelers are the only defense resembling anything we are dreaming and they got lit up yesterday.

Lets just be happy we have a potent offense to match with any team.

I forgot to add, I still think we have a pretty good defense. I really don't know what happened yesterday.

I think part of it was that they didn't expect the Lions to be able to run so effectively and Kitna got into a very nice rhythmn.

I think it is the "New England" Effect also. The Boys are 12-1, they are going to get the best shot of all teams left on the schedule, including the mediocre clubs left on the schedule.

It is quite troubling that we didn't get a sack (I don't know if the last FF at the end counted as a sack) on a team that seemingly gives sacks away but don't forget what we did to Brett Favre and that Green Bay passing attack. The Packers were putting up huge numbers before they played us and we totally shut them down.

I am not going to give up on this defense, although they have to play better. If they cannot stop the run in the future, this team will be in alot of trouble because as that will allow other teams to keep the ball out of #9's hands.

That is a valid point however I would call it the Cowboys effect, Since the rise of the Cowboys in the 60s all the mediocre teams have given the Cowboys their best. In the years the Cowboys were mediocre as well it mostly resulted in loses, in the years when the Cowboys were good those teams which beat us or even played a very competitive game would say, hey at least we played well against the Cowboys.

I do think many fans have forgotten or are to young to remember those days, but the fact is to many teams beating the Cowboys is as good as it gets. Combine that with a team that has some talent and whose season is on the line like Detroit yesterday and you get the kind of game we all witnessed.

One thing I know for certain is those all out games from opponents are going to get more frequent, I think fans should understand that. We won't be sneaking up on any teams from here on out. And I also think the coaches need to play it as such and leave something in the bag for the playoffs. That's where we need to show everything we have in our playbook not before. IMO blowouts mean nothing until the playoffs start, play to win but keep it conservative is OK with me.

Good points.

I only referred to it as the "New England" Effect because of the Pats' recently struggles in back to back weeks against extremely mediocre teams.

I absolutely agree with you. I would not be surprised if the Eagles or Commanders beat us, especially the former.

Face it, in this era where the rules favor pass happy offenses, maybe the idea of a dominating defense that can consistently hold an opponent to the teens or single digits is now antiquated. I think it was Aikman that said he would pick a great offense in this day and age to beat a great defense, and so would I (eg the Pats over the Steelers last night).

From what I've seen in the league so far, even most of the good defensive efforts that I've seen have been more a product of bad offenses (and there are plenty this year) than good defenses. The most complete football team I've seen so far in terms of balance are the Colts, but with the loss of Freeney I'm not even sure that's true anymore in an absolute sense.

I guess I can live with the Cowboys having a mediocre defense against good offenses (and there won't be that many in the playoffs) if they can continue to have a great offense that can put up 30+ points every week. A rematch with the Pats should be another shootout, and will come down to which defense can get those 1 or 2 critical stops when they are not giving up touchdowns.

That's very debatable.

Great offense usually means a great Quarterback and I believe a great Quarterback is more valuable than just about anything in the football world.

Just my opinion.

----

Also I want to say it always seems like the league is shifting. It goes from a great defensive league to a great offensive league.

Teams are always trying to figure out whats best. Thats why the Rams of the early 00's eventually get stopped.

Thats why the Baltimore Ravens and Tampa Bay Bucs D's usually get figured out and exploited and are no longer "dominant".

Not to mention Salary cap.

I agree from the stand point that in todays NFL regardless of how good of a defense you have the great offense will beat it with the rules in todays game.

I think the offense is here to stay. Every year the rules are tweaked to favor the offense.

From what I've seen the Colts have a good defense...Better then any other team I've seen. They step up to the big games and play Big.

if anybody will dethrown the Pats it will be them.

In today's NFL all you need is a great offense and an average Defense to win, and that's what we have just like the Pats and Packers.

A really good offense can make an average defense seem good, or a good defense seem great. I think our offense has that ability, with the size we have up front.

I can't quite figure out why our defense performs like it performs sometimes. Seems to be all the talent in the world, just some choice games they can't stop anything at all.

The Colts D was a lot better with Freeney rushing the QB, now they only have Mathis, but Mostly they just sit in the Cover 2 and make you try to drive the whole field and a big plus for them is that the Offense doesn't turn the ball over.

That's what I've been saying all year... Who *does* have this great, immoveable defense? The Ravens? Ben R. throws 5 TDs in a half on them. The Pats? They get run on by Baltimore and passed on by AJ Feeley. Pitt? They barely put up any resistance against the Pats.

It's just the way the league wants it. No touching the QB, no touching the WRs, holding on pass blocking seems to be okay... They've made it so hard to play defense that no one is going to look very good. I guess it's all right as long as the rules are the same for everyone (though I still detest it), but you can't compare what defenses look like today to what they looked like years ago.

No one has a great defense. Talent wise, there is no question this team is near the top, but they just haven't put it all together yet. They need to demonstrate consistentency first, which is more realistic than dominant in this day and age. I think we would all be happy with a little consistency.
