We already have the NFL's all time leading rusher, but what are DeMarcus Ware's chances at getting Bruce Smith's record of 200 sacks (19 seasons).

Right now he's thrid among active players

1.) Dwight Freeney 94 sacks (9 seasons)
2.) Julius Peppers 89 sacks (9 seasons)
3.) DeMarcus Ware 80 sacks (6 season)

If over the next 6 years, if Ware can stay healthy, and can averege the same 13.5 sacks a season, he'll have a legitamite shot (would be 40 shy of breaking the record).

Only 1 linebacker (Kevin Green with 160) is in the top 5 ever. Might not be possible playing OLB -- all the other top guys were Defensive Ends who never had to deal with pass coverage.

Lawrence Taylor isn't in the top 5?

edit: guess not, too many years before sacks were counted.

He's a long way away...but he might come close. If he can keep close to this pace he will CERTAINLY go down as the best pass rusher of his generation. Freeney and Peppers can't touch his consistency and production. Sorry haterz.

Tied for 8th. He only had one year before sacks were counted and counting that year would probably not be enough to get him in the top 5.

I doubt he'll play long enough to get the overall record. He might get the all-time single-season record and the career record for linebackers, though.

Surprises me that Kevin Greene is the #1 all time sack leader for LBs.... 160 is a ton. What doesn't surprise me is that Kevin Greene in the LB coach for the Packers....

According Lawrence Taylor, he had 9.5 sacks as a rookie. That would give him 142 for his career and make him fifth all-time (not counting anyone else who played before sacks were official).

Shout out to Harvey Martin...

Here are the top-25 sack leaders (unofficial):

1. Smith, Bruce - 200.0
2. White, Reggie - 198.0
3. Jones, Deacon - 173.5
4. Greene, Kevin - 160.0
5. Youngblood, Jack - 151.5
6. Doleman, Chris - 151.0
7. Page, Alan - 148.5
8. Taylor, Lawrence - 142.0
9. Strahan, Michael - 141.5
10. Dent, Richard - 137.5
11. Randle, John - 137.5
12. Eller, Carl - 133.5
13. O'Neal, Leslie - 132.5
14. Tayor, Jason - 132.5
15. Bacon, Coy - 130.0
16. Baker, Al - 128.5
17. Jackson, Rickey - 128.0
18. Marshall, Jim - 127.0
19. Humphrey, Claude - 126.5
20. Thomas, Derrick - 126.5
21. Rice, Simeon - 122.0
22. Simmons, Clyde - 121.5
23. Hardman, Cedrick - 121.0
24. Martin, Harvey - 114.0
25. Jones, Sean - 113.0

In terms of sacks-per-game, Ware is 3rd all-time (of those with 60 or more) at 0.83 (behind Deacon Jones - 0.91, & Reggie White - 0.85).

Based on that, it is conceivable that Ware could break the all-time record if he plays long enough and at a high enough level. Bruce Smith is tied with Harvey Martin (and Coy Bacon) at 0.72 SPG but played 121 more games than Martin.

Essentially, Ware would have to average 15+ sacks per season for the next 8 years in order to pass Smith. Not impossible but highly unlikely.

Through age 28:

White: 81
Ware: 80
Smith: 78

Smith's last season was age 40, White's was 39. Both of them had their best seasons in terms of sacks before age 28.

Ware's right on pace; it's all about longevity (and maybe 18-game seasons).

At his current pace, Anthony Spencer could break the record in the year 3022.

And Ware's the only serious threat to him. Joey Porter's at 97 but he's 33 years old, Terrell Suggs has 68.5 and is the same age as Ware, but started much younger and doesn't have nearly the sack rate, Vrabel's too old, Phillips is too far back.

18 game seasons would put the record more in reach but I'm still against them.

Harrison started doing steroids way too late.

18 game seasons means you can pretty much throw out all the career records.

Not necessarily... of course it will make an overall impact, but you also have to consider that it will give great players on bad teams a chance to pad their stats a bit...

Great players on great teams always have an advantage in the career stats department as they get to play extra games...

In my lifetime we've gone from 12 to 14 to 16 game seasons. My bet is 18 is pretty much topping it out...

:laugh2: right out loud

I'd rather have a Dline/OLB group that can put consistant and frequent pressure on the QB. This helps the LBs and 2ndary.

Sack records are nice, but I'd rather the defense as a whole play better overall.

Sacks-per-game is what's important to me. Not the all time record. I just want to see extended dominance over a reasonable amount of time. Say 10-12 seasons.

Much more concrened with where he is after that his 12th year and getting 6 more great to at least real good seasons out of him.

Would be nice to get a couple Lombardi's over that stretch.

I'll tell you the one record I think he still may get and that's the single season sack record.

Under optimal conditions I believe he has a 25 sack season in him.

23 for the record would be great, but everyone like round numbers like Ruth's 60.

25 sacks for Ware would be remembered big time and perhaps stand for a while.

Opps. Just realized we may be going to 18 games in 2012.
