All time sack record

He's a long way off from that stat. I'm not worried at this point about him getting to that. Lets just be thankful to watch him get his 11 or more each year and I'll be thrilled to see him get anything over 150+ sacks for a career. I think he can get in the 160-175 range for sure.

We'll wait till later to wonder about 200.

Absolutely.

The man was a beast.

The guy who really gets forgotten is George Andrie. He is credited with 97 sacks in 141 games. That puts him 3rd for the Cowboys in SPG behind Ware & Martin.

I also believe that he had more than that. I don't know when the Cowboys started keeping track of sacks but I think it was 1964 which means that both Andrie & Lilly had more than their "unofficial" records show.

Here are the Cowboys top-10 "unofficial" sack leaders (sacks & SPG):

1. Harvey Martin - 114.0 - 0.72
2. Randy White - 111.0 - 0.53
3. "Too Tall" Jones - 106.0 - 0.47
4. George Andrie - 97.0 - 0.69
5. Jethro Pugh - 95.5 - 0.52
6. Bob Lilly - 94.5 - 0.48
7. Jim Jeffcoat* - 94.5 - 0.50
8. DeMarcus Ware - 80.0 - 0.83
9. Greg Ellis* - 77.0 - 0.48
10. Tony Tolbert - 59.0 - 0.41

* (totals while with Cowboys only)

Man what I wouldn't give for some great pass rushing DLs now!

Bruce Smith does not get the credit he deserves. He notched many of his sacks playing DE in a 3-4.

Unreal.

Listen, I love me some D. Ware... and Kevin Green, Doleman, Strahan, Smith etc, etc were all great.. and I am sure Clay Matthews will be great too...

however

Reggie White and Deacon Jones (best I can tell from those old grainy films) in their prime were pure unadulterated havoc. Damn, Reggie White jacked up 300 lb OTs like they were small children on the play ground. We've never seen anybody like those two before or after.

I love Ware... he might even break the record some day, but there is no way Reggie White (in his prime) doesn't go down in (IMHO) as the ultimate combo sack / run stopping DE/OLB who ever graced the game.

Only 1 linebacker (Kevin Green with 160) is in the top 5 ever. Might not be possible playing OLB -- all the other top guys were Defensive Ends who never had to deal with pass coverage.

Which is why I think we should switch to the 4 - 3. The DE only responsibilities in the 4 - 3 are outside containment on the run and getting to the QB on the pass.

It's highly improbable that Ware will be able to catch Smith. Don't fret; he'll be in the HOF.

Reggie was great... no doubt, but Eric Williams (pre car wreck) made Reggie mow his lawn and like it...

True, however Reggie was in his 30s by that time.... A good 130 sacks into his career or so.

I doubt he'll play long enough to get the overall record. He might get the all-time single-season record and the career record for linebackers, though.

Longevity is the key. There's more to those records than being good.

Having the body-type and good fortune of health is the primary thing.

That's true of every career record. You have to play a LONG time and a high level and for a good team and stay healthy throughout. Oh and you need lots of luck.
