Many of the media scouts thought Kelvin Joseph was a legit 1st rd talent, but had off the field concerns and had limited experience on the college level that had him fall into the 2nd rd. He was drafted to eventually become the starter over Anthony Brown. This is his opportunity to do so. The team must find out now as next season both Brown/Lewis could be both off the roster. His college tape was very good against top competition in the SEC.

Before anyone says, he couldn't even beat out Bland, he has been the team's #3 outside corner, where Bland has played strictly inside at the nickel. Anthony Brown has been torched the last month with deep passes and has struggled defending the run at times. Joseph offers far more potential at the position, but like Bland we have to expect some growing pains as well.

I want to believe that but not holding out hope.. maybe Shefield gets shot as well..let them compete,

i still would prefer a Vet presence just in case., maybe bring on one guy at home currently to the active roster., we cant use these last 5 games as training camp for our young CBs we are in a payoff race and tight division.

.. here's the deal. We can't afford growing pains, at this juncture of time.

We need some experience at CB. Playoff atmosphere has arrived. Along with the implications.
agree well it arrives at the eagles, titans, and Washington stretch but Jags and Texans maybe those are the TEST games for these CBs , id still bring up one Vet sitting at home to the PS to get them prepared just in case.

not sure who thats the dilemma...

Fine? One of the most laughable words when describing a player. Only one worse is "decent".

So what does that mean exactly? I personally think that losing Brown is a huge loss. Joseph now becomes the weakest link on what was the #1 passing defense in the NFL.

I never thought I would say it, but we will miss Brown. Joseph will get attacked mercilously by EVERYONE. He has NOT been up to the task thus far.

I loved the Bland coming in at slot corner, but I do NOT love Joseph coming in for Brown. This is going to be a problem. On deep balls, 3rd downs, AND GL.

KJ is still so green, but so was Sam, Bland and Clark upon their introduction to starting snaps, and we have seen their development take place so I'm not dismissing KJs ability to possibly step up and develop into positive contribution just yet, let's give him the same opportunity.

Just saying at this point in the schedule we have some time to figure out the best way to shuffle this secondary still, the season isn't over because of the loss of Brown.

Loosing Lewis and Brown most recently is a hit, but injuries are part of the game, and we at least have some depth with upside at DB.

Joseph has the physical skills to become the player that we all want to see, and his introduction comes at a point in the schedule that he can develop down the stretch, and possibly discover himself as well and be a player in Qs defense.

It's part of the game, so learn quickly KJ because Q has other rostered options that will be pushing you as well.

KJ is not the last option this team has.

Losing both is a big hit. If we had Lewis than we could put Bland out on the edge and we would be fine. Joseph on the outside is a disaster.

He does stupid stuff, but I'm hoping that's a nervousness issue that he gets over quickly.

I think he's a bit hot-tempered, so he needs to get that in check. Personal foul/unsportsmanlike conduct penalties are unnecessary. I don't really consider penalties like the one he got the other night for running into the returner to be "stupid" penalties. He often gets down the field and hits the returner immediately after/when he catches the ball. He just misjudged that one.

We can probably afford a few these next couple of weeks.

The injury bug is like a lion on the Serengeti.

Once it has smelled CB blood, it knows now that the CB squad is injured and unable to fight off another attack. Therefore, the injury bug will wait patiently for the CB squad to bleed out some more and weaken. Then, it will attack once more with devastating consequences.

Only security in numbers will save the CB squad.

In other words, sign more CB's. Never assume that any squad now has it's fair share of injuries and is now protected by the odds.

On the field?

The punt returner took a step to the side late and KJ misjudged the positioning. What else?

Face mask against the Giants (first game)
Unnecessary roughness against the Eagles
Holding against the Eagles
Blindside block against the Packers
Pass Interference against the Vikings
Fair catch interference against the Colts (His fault, not the returner's.)

Average one penalty every other game. That's not good.

I'm not saying he shouldn't get a chance. I'm saying he needs to do better.

Based on the way the Cowboys put it, that they would try KJ first, it sounds like they are not completely sold on him. Then they are building up the practice squad guy which makes no sense to me. You have Wright and Joseph on the 53 man roster. If Kendall Sheffield is so good, why isn't he on the 53 man roster? Maybe it is a roster space issue? Seems like Brown going on IR fixes that problem.

Anyway, I think it could be a big deal any time a starter goes down. Brown is not the greatest but he is steady and experienced. KJ is so inexperienced and clueless he will get a baptism by fire. Not everyone survives that procedure.

I agree that Brown is not the greatest. But I think you're discounting his talent. He's playing opposite Diggs, and the guy has allowed how many TDs this season?

You realize how many TDs other CBs have given up? The Cowboys play a certain kind of defense. And the only reason Diggs even gets thrown at is because Brown often has his guy covered like stink on poo.

His 4.3 is nothing to shake a stick at. I'm very concerned he's gone, from a fan standpoint. Because it reduces our chances of winning. Obviously, we have to go on without him.

That said, I would say you roll with Kelvin Joseph in the slot. Not because I think Joseph sucks, but because I think he's better suited for the slot, especially to cut his teeth in the NFL. That's a perfect spot for him. Doran Bland seems better suited to play the outside. I mean, yes, he has quick hips. But I see him as more of an outside cover guy or a free safety. I like that he has flex. And we're running thin in the secondary with Brown out. That's part of the risk we took rolling with so many TEs, and other roster spots that make our team unique, and tough to defend. I hope that doesn't end up costing us.

On a different note, I would seriously suggest that the team start gearing up for the Eagles like two days a week, start game planning for them. This Texans game should not give us any trouble simply because we outmatch them in every phase of the game. My strategy next game would be to play Micah Parsons deeper in coverage and have him mirroring Jalen, It Hurts.

The kid on the PS has some nfl experience and under Quinn. He should be solid depth but we need Joseph to take the reins and be decent. He will get picked on but if he can just be decent with our pass rush he might be ok
Lewis is signed for next year, brown is a FA coming off a tough injury late in the season
I think it’s likely brown signs back on one year deal then hits the FA market
CB is certainly a spot I could see us addressing in t by e draft if Joseph struggles since he was drafted to be the next starter
This draft is top-heavy with CB talent, which should ease your worried mind.

Teams were doing the same with Brown, especially down the field over the last month. Yes, some growing pains, but I believe Joseph has a higher ceiling at the position.

I understand many are worried about starting an unproven player, but he was drafted to eventually become the starter. He has 1st rd ability, question is will he be able to play like that, I think he eventually will with more experience.

That’s just it…until these guys have been targeted by OCs for a full game, we don’t really know if they will be fine or not. Count me as somewhat concerned about KJ.
No doubt, he must prove himself. I might be in the minority, but think he will be an upgrade when he gets more experience.

And yet Joseph has only received 87 snaps on the year. Tell you everything you need to know about how the coaching staff feels.
Both our outside corners have been healthy, he was seeing just mop up duty for the most part.

most other years I would agree with you
This year, given the NFC we have a real shot at a SB and I’m not rolling the dice with Joseph
Philly has great WRs and we will need to go through them
We need another starting outside CB
He was probably the only one who had success against Devonta Smith in the SEC. I think he will have some early growing pains, but he will be a solid starter.

Joseph has issues with awareness and penalties. I question his ball skills as well. Physically he holds up well just needs to know when the ball is coming his way.
I believe he needs more reps/more experience. He only played a handful of games on the college level.

Really doesn't matter who they are they will get picked on being opposite Diggs. Most of the big plays are going to happen there so I guess some safety help is going to be schemed in.
