Bag sir? No, I want all you clerks to form a chain and pass the items down the line one at a time like they put our fires in the old west. And I want that little feller with the attitude at the trunk of the car.
I have fun at the market because most of the time I pay in cash and when they start to give me the change and the receipt, I go "OK, cash in this hand, receipt in this hand and coins in this hand" and I get this confused look and then we all start laughing. That is pretty much a thankless job and I try and make it fun for them and share my latest observations about shoppers in the store. They're not allowed to do that but I can.
I watch the human interaction, or lack thereof, and all it takes is one person being nice to them and appreciating them to really make their day.
One day back in 2020 when we're in the height of the pandemic, I got a wild hair and as I was leaving the store, I turned and shouted "Attention HEB people, thank you for coming to work today and helping us". I was shocked at the applause from people, like they were just waiting to show their appreciation and needed an opening, and I still get comments from the younger people that recognize me because I am in there 2-3 times a week because I am trying to keep their ranking in wine sales up at the top in the chain. That ranking is as important to me as Booger's Forbes ranking is to him.
