I kind of feel sorry for McGovern as many of the fan base seems to have almost unobtainable goals for him his rookie season. He is almost the Anti-Travis Frederick and will more likely be closer to Lael Collins.
Travis had the luxury of being a 1st Rounder that "could have been available in the third", so therefore the EXPECTATIONS were of him being a terrible pick and an average at best lineman. When he proved to be a Great Player, when that expectation was not really there, he gain a lot of fans for "beating the odds".
But Lael Collins, a guy who for all intents and purposes, was going to be a 1st Round pick until he became a Person of Interest in the death of his ex-girlfriend less than 48 hours before the draft, the expectation was that he was going to come into Dallas and could be a piece of the offensive line for a decade or so. Now, many are wishing and hoping that he is traded away so the Cowboys get something for him before he walks via Free Agency.
I DO NOT HATE the McGovern pick. Actually, IMO, he is one hell of a steal and has the potential to be up there with Prime Smith, Martin, and Frederick. But I am not expecting him to do so in his Rookie Year, and it may take an injury or trade for him to even start this year as we are 7-8 o-line players deep with significant NFL starting experience and it's a much different type of line that he is coming into than Smith, Martin or Frederick did. If McGovern, as a player, was as good as the YouTube video says he was with "No bad, no ugly", then he would have never been available in the 2nd Round, let alone in the 3rd. EVERY PLAYER to ever go into the NFL had something they needed to learn or improve on, and McGovern is no different, therefore his expectations should be of that of a new hire at a new job. He may have a great skill set, but he still need to learn the trade.
I really do hope he comes in and meets everyone's lofty expectations in his Rookie Year. BUT IN THE CASE THAT HE DOES NOT, I really hope that he is not given the "<name> sucks because he was not an All-Pro his rookie year" that so many of our young players have received over the past several years.
Just because he is not Great and/or does not start in 2019 does not mean he was a bad pick. Please remember that.
