Am I missing something

Listen, I am a die hard like everybody else on here, but the one thing we haven't done so far this offseason is find another passrusher, I mean I'm sure that it was all Parcels fault and that Phillips has these great blitz packages, but the problem as I see it is that San Diego honestly has better rushers, do you guys see that as a continuing weakness, to count on Ellis to rehab and be what he was is asking alot don't you think, we also desperately need another nt to back up Ferge, thought he got wore down at the end last year, maybe that afected our rush, am I missing something here, was it all the scheme gone wrong..

To begin with, there weren't many pass rushing free agents available this year other than Joey Porter, and we showed interest in him, but he signed with the Dolphins before we had a chance to bring him in. Most of the other free agent LB/DL wouldn't fit the 3-4 role anyway or were pure run stoppers (Fletcher, Spikes, Briggs). We still have the draft to address these needs and the Cowboys are looking at a few edge rushers in the draft.

IMO, Zimmer ran a very passive-oriented pass defense. If Phillips employs a more aggressive one, as he did in San Diego, I believe that we will be pleasantly surprised in finding out that we already have enough pass rushers on the team to put adequate pressure on the quarterback. However, I do agree with you 100% about the nose tackle position. Hopefully, we'll address that very real concern in the mid-to-upper rounds during the draft.

I guess we'll see but honestly did Canty or Spears or some of the others even smell the QB in the last few games. Granted RW can't cover worth beans but then again they were asking him to hold hands with folks for a longtime. Charles Hailey where are you....

thats what we drafted bobby carpenter for. lets let him play a few games before we start trying to replace him.with carp ellis will not have to play alotm of downs and his rehab is coming around fine.
we need a backup nt and i prefer a f.a. there but not much to choose from so we will look to the draft. could be some interesting prospects in the 5th and 6th rounds

I would hope they look for the eventual replacement at NT in this draft.

I'd bet good money we see a pass-rusher in the first two rounds.

The problem with your statement is simple..

Who was a 3-4 OLB we could have signed

Both Porter and THomas were signed before we had a chance tobring them in. So who else was out here for us to pursue

I agree with this 100%

I think you also have to consider the assignment differences. BP asked the DE to setup in a gap, if I am not wrong, were they would more thanlikely get doubled team. WP asks his DL to just go man to man. So this alone "may" generate more pressure in the pocket.

theory being delivered out of valley ranch is all about scheme, isn't it? more aggressive scheme = better pass rush. no need to change personnel. ...supposedly

we'll see...

I don't know about a pass rusher, but I think we could use another TE in the 2nd or 3rd round. ;)

I couldn't agree more. I mean drafting Anthony Fasano and adding depth to the TE position after already aquiring depth at TE through the FA was waaaaay more important than drafting Ko Simspon to play FS, a position of need, who turned in 77 tackles, 1 sack, 2 interceptions, and 4 passes defended as a rookie. I mean, we would have missed out on Fasano's contribution of 126 yards receiving, 9.7 yards a game, and zero TD's. I sure am glad Bill and Jerry didn't mess that up. Otherwise, this whole forum would have blown up.

Your sarcasm noted. Let's wait for at least another year before we bury Fasano........who is to say that Simpson would have been the answer under the previous leadership. One other note..........I see we are still blaming our "vanilla defense" on Mr. Zimmer. I still find it hard to believe that most of the patrons on this forum still think that Zimmer was in complete control of our defense and not BP! WOW!!!!

I don't know if it's safe to rely on smoke and mirrors when it comes to the pass rush. I don't think any old guy can just do it, I think it takes guys who really have a knack for it.

With that said, we really do need to come away with a pass rusher on day 1.

Both Zimmer and Parcells, in his later years, presided over conservative defenses. I find it curious that it is always presented as one or the other.

Yes it was.

Yeah, Fasano didn't come in handy at all especially after the TE we acquired in FA got hurt and never played a regular season down. With the the Two Tight-End offense the Cowboys used to start the season, I'm sure we could have just plugged Tony Curtis in there if we had not drafted Fasano.

It was really unfortunate that we had to draft Pat Watkins in the 5th round after passing on Simpson in the 2nd round. I mean, sure, Watkins only had 38 tackles, 2 FF, 3 INT, and 7 PD despite only starting maybe half the season while playing for a playoff team with a higher-ranked defense. Sure, others passed on Simpson too and he somehow went from a predicted 2nd/3rd rounder to 4th rounder, but man, why couldn't we have gotten him instead of Watkins even though Watkins had better stats in every category except for tackles despite less playing time?
