Am I the only one who’s beginning to really like Trey Lance?

Don't have to like Trey Lance at this point - but like the potential upside on a recent number 3 pick at the most valuable position in football for a future 4th rounder...there is a good value there

Been watching his college highlights and been starting to really like him as a player. We fleeced SF!! Yeehaw! I think he’s going to make us a contender in a few years once he takes the keys from Dak. He has all the tools and the ability. He just needs to realize it. If he does, watch out NFL.
When Kyle Shanahan says Purdy would have to 'melt in practice' to lose his starting job I think that speaks volumes of Lance, and Darnold for that matter.

Having a 7th rounder with average physical traits come aboard and kick your backside to the curb, even after coming off surgery, is just piss-poor. The 9er's were actually elated that someone had the nerve to give them a 4th to rid them of an egregious draft day blunder.

In a couple of years if this guy can't show enough to garner a third rounder in a trade then the instead of the Cowboys being the fleecer you speak of, we certainly will be the fleeced.

That being said, I hope the young man develops and realizes what some believe his potential to be but thus far....ouch.

WTH have you possibly seens since the trade that somehow has made him look like a stud since the niners declared him a dud?

No, he’s thrown less passes in his ENTIRE football career including high school than most QB’s throw in one year.
thats why i’m shocked SF moved on from him this early.

SF botched the whole development of this QB. year one they kept Jimmy G. year two, Trey got injured. Year three brock purdy runs shannahan system like the HC wants it run. ok, but what is sam darnold even doing there? when fans at camp say clearly Trey outplayed Darnold in camp and in pre season. yet darnold is named number 2?! all this after you gave up all that draft capital for Lance?

all i’m saying is SF did not allow this kid to develope or give him a chance. Shanahan is said to have made up his mind who qb 2 was going to be months ago, once sam darnold was signed. oh well….

i like the trade. i like his upside. hopefully he beats out cooper next season and we shall see from there

I mean it's pretty obvious he'd be starting in sanfran if he showed more. It's also obvious they spent way too much for a developmental player and then failed to develop him. So I'm not sure why we'd compare him to Purdy.

The only question is if their development failed due to injuries, lack of patience and an Ill fitting system or if he is simply incapable of getting over the hump.

From the outside it seems like 4 games as a starter and an injury riddled campaign is not sufficient time to develop. I completely understand and support trying it the right way, without enormous pressure and seeing what we have.

I like the trade, but come on man this kid is an extremely raw developmental project. And he could be a Free Agent by 2025. There are a ton of unknowns about what will happen.

I’m intrigued but he won’t see much action this year unless it’s in a gadget play or the season starts heading south. For me, this is about a kid who although he has upside, has already been cast aside by one of our biggest rivals. I’m tapping the brakes for the moment.

Just putting it out there:

Why not start him in a few weeks time i.e. October, when he's learned the playbook? What have we got to lose? He's no worse than Dak right now, but has a lot more upside. Not saying he would be better than Dak, but its extremely unlikely that he"d be worse. Low risk move that allows us to see if he's good enough. With our loaded team, who knows, if he improves with gametime we may have a chance this year.

Yay! A total project who has shown right now to be a bust who is occupying an important roster spot while other spots are short on backups while already being acknowledged will not be playing all of 2023 and will be on 3rd string riding the bench the whole season. How stupid is that?

I’m about as excited as you can be for a QB you got in the 4th round. With any player in the draft and especially picks 4-7 I am hopeful they become all pros but I’m not basing my fan hood on it. I’ll be a fan either way. This particular trade is more intriguing due to its potential but Trey is not going to make or break 2023. It’s fun to talk about because it gives me hope and another aspect to it Jerry being proactive for a change instead of reactive. If we fail in the next couple seasons and Lance doesn’t amount to anything I’ll still be happy we were proactive. I’m still happy that the Cowboys traded a 3rd for Drew Hensen. It didn’t work out but at least they pulled the trigger.

I just don't start out an evaluation of a person with character deficiencies in view as the final status. I'm a fan first, and was a NCO who had pretty tough demands and never forgot the place for good leadership and practice at all levels.

To me, this is NOT an ignorant group of players and have a functional leadership group all the way...bottom to top.

I dont like how Jerry made the move without his HC (and McClay?) being part of the decision/discussion. Reminded me a lot of TO. Parcells in his way let it be known, McCarthy is a bit of a wimp. Shows once again Jerry hasnt learned a thing about working as a team.

As far as Lance we may have overpaid and he's forcing us to use a spot on the roster but I'm hoping for the best

Ok…I’m excited about giving him space in a new town to reset and develop but…c’mon

You think he’s gonna replace Dak in the next two years? He couldn’t even win the 2nd string job at SF. Do you think SF would trade him to a NFC playoff rival if they thought there was a remote chance he would become elite in a year?

I’m not trying to be a downer but you all need to temper your expectations, and see this as a rookie starting his career completely over.

My personal theory is that Rush’s abilities no longer match this offensive style, and the cowboys are hoping Trey can be a serviceable backup and then flip Cooper to a QB starved team for a 1st or 2nd round pick. If they get more than that from Trey long term, fantastic

Well sure, of course you like him if you're watching his college highlights from five years ago, there's a reason he got drafted so high. Pretty much every QB drafted at the top of the first round looked great in college. But there's recent tape of him too...not a ton, but some.
Hype..

No, I really like the kid. Didn't know much about him until the trade but it really seems he was let down by the SF org.

Amazed at how beloved he was by the fanbase and how they think the SF organization failed him.

Good, talented kid. Right attitude. I am pulling for him.

Agreed, but what does what you said relate to what I previously displayed concern as to why field a roster spot on a 3rd QB who is never going to touch the field in 2023 and possibly never develop into a starting QB? Isn't that what the practice squad is for, plus are there a handful of practice squad players who can be protected from being stolen by another team? Why not put Lance there and use the 53 man roster spot you gave to him for someone else who likely will be able to play and contribute for the team this year?

He's a good kid that is very raw and he was with a coach who treats qbs like crap. Nothing to not like about the move.
