Well, it seems she has now committed suicide.

I guess I don't understand why police couldn't get to this guy. I don't know the Canadian laws but if this guy was an adult, couldn't he be charged with having a partially nude pic of an underage girl?

It is certain people. Whoever it was tried to blackmail her into more sexual conduct. I'm sure if she fully complied at some point it could have easily become physical.

I don't agree with that as a whole though. Incidents like this are just the more visible ones. Our society simply doesn't look at shaming and embarrassing people as much of a problem. It has just now gotten to that point these past few years due to teen suicide.

I usually don't feel a ton of pity for people in this situation, but this is a gut wrencher. So many things/people that could have happened to save this girl. A real shame.

As for lessons to be learned...no girl under 18 should EVER have a web cam. FB is bad enough for teens.

I will never understand why we, as a society, push and advertise stuff like this when it can have such negative effects on our children. So much of the music, TV and movies are trash for kids.

We should be keeping them from stuff like this at all costs.

Instead we spash it in their face and then have remorse when it turns out bad like this.

I will never understand why we, as a society, push and advertise stuff like this when it can have such negative effects on our children. So much of the music, TV and movies are trash for kids.

We should be keeping them from stuff like this at all costs.

It's a difficult balance when your country is based on freedom and the premise that all men are created equal. You can't just take peoples freedoms away because you don't like them. The only way this happens is if it is having a serious negative impact on society. The question is determining what is considered serious enough to impede everyone's freedom?

It' not that I don't like them, it is that it is so destructive to our kids.

One girl kills herself because of ridicule on Facebook.
One boy ruins his life with alcohol.
One dad tears his family apart with gambling addiction.

One is too many for me.

I could live without things that I am free to do, if it saved other peoples lives. I would find something else to do.

I guess it is open to interpretation if a young girl dying, or lives being ruined because of alcohol or gambling is serious enough to impede everyone's freedom.

Let's replace negative, destructive things with other more positive things. Everyone would get over it.

I'm off of my soapbox now, .. I just get sick of kids lives being broken into pieces because of things we have given them to play with.

We should better protect our young people, heck even our young adults.

I'm not disagreeing with you at all. That said, I definitely don't want people to impede my freedoms at will either just because they think something is bad and have a case or two that shows that something bad can come from it.

It's like the 16 ounce drinks in NYC. That would have never passed except for the massive financial strain obesity puts on the country from the medical issues that are derived from it.

If they can limit 16 ounce drinks, they could ban alcohol too. Of course, the backlash would be huge. This is why I said the question comes down to a balance of freedoms and all men created equal. Meaning if I'm equal to you, then you can't tell me what I can and can't have. The only boundary becomes if you are doing enough harm to the people around you that the people around you want it ban. In the case of alcohol, that isn't likely to happen. (we saw what happen the last time they tried)

Take that as an example, I'm 6' 190, in good shape. I should be able to drink however many ounces I want.

But if it helps others, I'm willing to do without anything over 16 ounces. I'll get over it.

That's why I don't do Facebook, I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't gamble.

I don't want to lead someone else astray. I'll get over not doing those things, that I have done in the past. (except Facebook)

I'm beginning to think that Facebook is the devils tool. (of course so is alcohol and gambling)

Today we call it bullying but in years past, they were traits linked to our DNA and played themselves out in our own evolutions. They were survival instincts.

As a society, we have moved further away from the family unit and allowed our children to isolate themselves from their parents or the very few people who love them for no other reason the the fact that they are a part of us. What does that mean? It means that they become vulnerable to people who do not have this love for them. It plays itself out in scenes such as this daily. It's unfortunate but that's how it is now. It takes strong people to survive. A little intelligent thought goes a very long way. Many of these kids, well, they just are not armed with this kind of thing all to often and they pay for it. This may seem callous and I suppose it is but never the less, it's true.

That's not callous. That is exactly what is happening as the family unit breaks down.

Our country probably won't go down because of terriosts or forces outside our borders, .. but will crumble from within as the family unit continues to crumble.

You can't protect them from the world, at least when they see that stuff with us present, we can discuss it with them. If we don't then their friends will show them without a parent's filter.
