Would've been better to see photos of the ground fighting that made all of that possible...

But thanks nonetheless.

Wow, nice shots.

65 years this past week.
One of the men who raised the flag at Iwo Jima was a Native American from here in Arizona named Ira Hayes. Johnny Cash wrote a song about him that is really a sad tale. There is a school named in his honor here, and I often wonder if people even know what he did.

Little known fact, the 3 men in that photo who survived played themselves in the John Wayne movie "The Sands of Iwo Jima." The flag they raised in the movie was the actual flag they raised. John Wayne handed it to Ira Hayes in the movie.

It's sad the way Hayes' life ended.

The fate of Rene Cagnon was equally sad. He really hoped to cash in on his role in raising the flag, and instead wound up embittered and working various odd, menial jobs towards the end of his life. Not to mention his wife was an even bigger glory hound.

People should really read Flags of Our Fathers.

Isn't that written by John Bradley's (one of the other 3 survivors) son?

Yes. It was. James Bradley. He's also written FlyBoys: A True Story of Courage. Another best-seller about a group of WWII Flyboys in the Pacific.

Like Nike says, just do it, man. You won't regret it.

I think I will.

Have you read his new book, Imperial Cruise? I wonder if it's any good.

heh, funny you should mention that. I was browsing in Borders the other week and caught a glimpse of it, and looked at it, but I had already saw the book I wanted to read, The Remains of D Company. That was a great book. But Imperial Cruise will be my next buy.

Thanks for sharing, Hostile.

Nothin' like a Mustang.

Sometimes I wonder how the war (especially in Europe) would've turned out had the RAF/North American not came up with the A-36 Apache (predecesor of the P-51 Mustang)

It would have taken awhile. Without those long-range fighters, we would have lost a lot more bombers.
