Amtrak's new AIRO train sets are nearing their revenue service debut! After months of testing on the Northeast Corridor, the new trains, built by ‪@SiemensMobilityGlobal‬ in Sacramento, have begun testing on the Amtrak Cascades route between Seattle, WA and Vancouver, BC and between Seattle and Eugene, OR. Initial full corridor test runs were conducted by ‪@amtrak‬ on July 21st and July 23rd. In this video, we will follow the very first test trip on its journey between Seattle and Vancouver and return.

I wish Amtrak had a route from Omaha straight south to Dallas/Ft. Worth or maybe even to Waco. I would probably take trains to visit family down in Texas if the routes were available. But it turns out they have way more East/West routes than North/South ones. Their trains aren't fast like in Japan, but I hear they're plenty comfortable.

I rode on Amtrak for the first time about 15 years ago from Seattle to Vancouver. It was a nice, scenic ride.

I wonder if they’ve improved them inside. Amtrak pails in comparison to the trains in Canada.

In 1861, four Sacramento shopkeepers invested $24,000 and built the most powerful corporation in the American West. The Southern Pacific Railroad would control 85% of California's railroad mileage, own millions of acres of land, bribe the state legislature for decades, and run San Francisco from its headquarters on Market Street. They called it the Octopus. This is the story of the Big Four — Leland Stanford, Collis Huntington, Mark Hopkins, and Charles Crocker — and the railroad empire they built from the Gold Rush through the Gilded Age. From the brutal construction of the transcontinental railroad through the Sierra Nevada, to the grand mansions on Nob Hill, to the Mussel Slough Tragedy of 1880, to the Supreme Court case that made corporations "people," to the rise of Governor Hiram Johnson and the Progressive movement that finally broke the machine.
