Bring back Adam Jones as the 4th or 5th corner for this team...
And yeah, I know, I know, nobody wants a distraction or to disrupt team chemistry. But I honestly don't believe bringing Pac back for such a low-profile position (4th or 5th on the depth-chart & possibly as a punt returner) would make too many waves. And frankly, if this team couldn't hold its chemistry together by the bit of extra media attention that bringing Pac in as a reserve would cause, then we're already doomed anyway. 'Cause a team that fragile ain't goin' anywhere this year. I have greater faith in our guys than that.
We are perilously thin at cornerback. Alan Ball, by all accounts, is more comfortable at safety than corner, and both Brown & Mickens are just terrible at this point. If something happens to any of our top three boys, our nickel & dime packages are going to suffer greatly. Though not so much if we have Pac as a backup to our backups, and it also may greatly enhance our punt return game. Pac was close on a few punt returns last year, and with the better blocking (hopefully) that DeCamallis should bring, I think he could be a very dangerous returner for us & allow us to avoid putting someone truly valuable in that position (Felix, for example).
There would, of course, be an immediate media storm. But with Pac hardly ever seeing the field on defense, it's one destined to die down fairly quickly. Hell, Jerry might even get some props for bringing in capable insurance and placing Pac so far down on the depth chart. And you know Pac would be grateful even just to have that job, as it's a heckuva lot more than he has now.
I know he's a controversial figure, and I know his legal snafu last year was a distraction. But he's also a very fine talent and could serve as more than a competent replacement for either Scandrick, Jenkins or Newman like nobody else on our roster or in free agency. This is a team with real Superbowl aspirations, and Pac is a player who could really help our team in a support role; a role which would limit his media exposure, and injury willing, his vitalness to our team.
I understand that most on this board won't feel the same way. But I don't think our team is too fragile to handle Pacman coming aboard as an insurance policy. He already knows the system, is supposedly in great shape, is humbled enough to take a job as a reserve without blinking and has more talent in one leg than Ball or Brown do collectively.
I'd wait 'til after the first game of the season, but then I'd send Brown packing, keep Ball at safety (and 5th corner), plug Pacman into the dime formations as a 4th and play some ball. If it ultimately doesn't work out for whatever reason, then we cut a 4th or 5th corner without much hoopla and move on.
I, too, want a veteran corner. Pacman. No one could help us more, in my opinion.
