Here is a breakdown of every play in the Passing game using the All-22 film. I believe you will see that our QB didn't play as bad as most would assume. He is getting no help from the playcalling and from his teamates. He has his mistakes during the game like any qb....just take a look.
1st
2nd and 5- 5 wide, threw short curl to Austin, gets tackled for a loss. May have had a 10 yard curl on other side…all curls ran.
2nd series-
1st and 10- 3 wr, 1 te, man defense with Earl over the top. 5 yard drop, 5 wrs in route including zeke, very good pocket. 9 yard slant, hits Gallup in the numbers, hit by corner who pops it out and Earl scoops for an Int. Not Daks fault at all.
3rd series
2nd and 7- 3 wr, 1 te, zeke motions to an empty backfield. All in route, seahawks blitz slot corner off of the left who doesn’t get picked up at all. Earl picks up Beasley. Dak takes the 5 yard curl over the middle to Swaim. Ball out in 2 seconds. Had no more time than that. The right play.
3rd and 2- Shotgun 3wr 1 te, zeke in the backfield. 3rd and 2 and Dak throws to Swaim on the short cross because Seattle has Zone Blitzed a LB. They are man up on all the wrs, both outside wrs are running 13 yard curls and Beasley is double covered (bracketed) with the LB and CB. Only real option quick was Swaim who had no separation with the LB. Good pass but LB swats it away. Protection was good, threw it around 3 seconds but again, no options were open. Threw it at about 3 seconds, perhaps could have thrown the 13 yard curls but it would have taken 3.5 seconds. Why don’t we have more short options on 3rd and 2 with a blitz????
1st and 10- Dallas 20- I formation- Seattle blitzes. Playaction fake to Zeke, I wouldn’t say it was a good fake by Dak. Dak was certainly feeling the pressure and threw the ball to Gallup with anticipation out of his 13 yard out but the throw was terrible, well over his head. I would say that Dak should make this throw. I will also say, Zeke running lazy route out of the backfield doesn’t help the qb and all of the other routes were deeper stems.
3rd and 9- Shotgun 4 wide. Blitz by the hags. All are picked up, dak with the 7 step drop and steps up nicely in the pocket, Martin’s (highest paid guard in the league?)guy is bull rushing him and collapsing the pocket. Guys are still in their routes, all deeper curls. Dak ducks under the swipe of the DT, runs to right to get away, another guy there, finally Beasley is open in the flat and Dak throws it over his head. Hardly Dak’s fault as any other qb is sacked there. Maybe a normal human sized wr makes that play…no other options at all while Dak is running for his life. NONE.
4th series-
1st and 10- twins left, double te right. Tried to run playaction right and roll Dak left, right after the fake, Dak is crushed. NOT his fault as he had NO chance. Terrible.
3rd and 9- shotgun 3wr, 1te split. Protection good, Dak throws to Zeke about 5 yards go right, perfectly thrown ball that would be a first down no doubt…dropped. That is the #4 pick in the draft who is struggling all year out of the backfield. The critique is that there was a shot at Beasley over the middle Deep but he clearly took the higher percentage play, which should have worked.
5th series
2nd and 7- shotgun 3wr, 1 te split. Blitz by seattle…all world rb goes to cut block a blitzing lb and he jumps over him and into the qb. It is a miracle the ball didn’t hit the guy in the helmet but he did get Dak’s arm and couldn’t follow through. Clearly…not on Dak.
3rd and 7- Shotgun 3 wr, 1 te. Blitz by seattle. Nice pocket, steps up in it. Had either Swaim to the right or Beasley to the left on crossing routes…took Beasley for 18 yards. This is something that drives me nuts though…Beasley just runs out of bounds…I hate that. Cut back into the field and make people tackle you. Drives me nuts.
2nd and 12 at Seattle 41. Shotgun, 3 wr, 1 te. Off the snap, DE gets a great jump on the snap and has Tyrone compromised quick, he made up for it. This could be an area to improve for the offense..he knew when the snap was coming and timed it perfectly. Need to vary up our silent snap count. Dak want to go left to Deonte but he is taking forever and a day to get into and out of his route. Dak feels pressure from the right side Collins’ guy. Zach’s guy then come free and Dak delivers a strike to Hurns on the right while getting absolutely tattooed. 10 yards.
3rd and 2- Shotgun, 3 wr, 1 te split. Seattle in a zone but blitz. Defender peels off with zeke to the right flat. Dak looks left, pumps right to Swaim. Starts rolling rt, hits zeke down the right side for a 31 yard TD. Except that he stepped out. Clearly Dak’s fault…lol It would have tied the game at 7 btw.
6th series-
1st and 10 @Dal 25- Shotgun, 3wr, 1 te short split right. 4 man rush, sacked after about 3 seconds. I will put this on Dak as I don’t know why he didn’t throw it to Beasley for a short gain in the flat. Looks like he was waiting on Hurns to finish his curt route. You want to know why we don’t have any big plays…it seems our whole offense is running out/in culs. Dak should have thrown that ball away.
2nd and 17- Same look as previous play, this was a designed quick screen to the left that had a chance to pick up some yards but Zeke gets shoestring tackled for no gain. Again, terrible in out of the backfield.
3rd and 17- same formation as previous two plays- another designed quick screen the opposite way this time. Picks up about 8 yards.
7th series-
2nd and 15 after Gathers false start, @ Dallas 6- Shotgun, 3wr, te tight. Motion zeke to empty backfield. 10 yard slant to Deonte. Dak does a good job of looking left to lock the lbs and safety before throw.
3rd and 5- Same formation as previous play. Keep zeke in. Blitz by Seattle. That Frank guy DE absolutely jumps the count but was legal and destroyed tyrone of the edge. Is drapped on Dak in 2 seconds…Tackles loop and after Dak shrugs off the DE Gets away from another defender and spins to another defender for the sack. They actually had a hot read on the play to Deonte but Dak just had no time…hardly his fault.
8th Series-
2nd and 8- Shot gun, 3wr, 1 te short split. Blitz by seattle that is picked up well. Good pocket. Complete to Swaim in under 3 seconds for 4 yards. If he was more aggressive…may have had Austin deep right on this play but you can see he wanted the ball out. This is the cumulative effect of getting your *** handed to you.
3rd and 4- Empty, 3 wr 1 te split, 1 rb. Motion zeke back into backfield to confirm man coverage. Delivers a strike for a slant to Hurns in 2.6 seconds. Literally had no other time as defended blasted Williams backward into Dak’s legs as he threw. Unblievable.
1st and 10 at the Seattle 32- Shotgun 3wr, 1 te. 11 yards to Swaim on a nice play design. Had Swaim kind of work his route as if he was to block and leaked out to the left wide open.
1st and 10- Shotgun 1 wr, 3 te (2 left tight Rico most left, 1 right tight)- Zeke split wide right. Interesting formation. Probably looking to get matchups they liked. Just a short slant to Austin who runs 5 yards backwards trying to make a play. No gain.
3rd and 6, seattle 17- Shotgun, 3 wrs 1 te tight. Smith in at hb. Seattle runs the same DT twist and one comes fee with a shot at Dak. Dak see it, steps up left and then Frank Clark has a bead on him and he tries to run for it and is sacked for 0 yards gained. Wasn’t a whole lot there but this is just messy line play again. The pressure is affecting the entire offense. He had Cole to the right but it was one of those run in twist and run out routes that he runs. A little slow developing by the time the pressure showed.
9th series-
1st and 10, shotgun 3wr 1te tight. Playaction sweep action to the right. No one open, Beasley coming across the middle, quick pressure from the DT because the Guard was pulling and Collins had an almost impossible block to make. Dak start right to avoid that, tries to hit Beasley coming across throw wasn’t great, almost made a great catch. Inc.
2nd and 10- Shotgun 3 wr, 1 te short split right. Poor decision by Dak, threw it to the flat to Zeke for 3 yards but had Gallup wide open over the middle. Would have easily picked up the first.
1st and 10- Shotgun 3 wr, 1 te tight. Pattented curl to Deonte for 13. Good protection and good ball.
Drive dead with a fumble from Zeke.
10th series-
1st and 10, seattle 38- Traditional Shotgun- 12 yard curl to Gallup who…gasp…actually fights for 5 extra yards. Go figure. Good pocket, good ball.
1st and 10- Shotgun 3wr with TE lined up in wing rt. Read option, dak runs for 10 penalty on the defense adds to yardage.
1st and goal from 6- shotgun, 3wr te split- wanted to go to Beasley at the goaline but Thomas was tracking…feels pressure, no one open. Rolls right…throws to Gallup high in the right corner. Would have been a tough catch. Wasn’t much there at all.
2nd and 3 shuffle pass td.
11th series
1st and 10, shotgun 3wr, te wing right. Good pocket, good time. May have had a shot to Beasley in the seam but ET was tracking and probably dettered that throw. Threw to Swaim short who caught it and then had it knocked out.
2nd and 10- Shotgun, same set. Terrible pass from dak on a little dump off over the middle. High and behind zeke…totally horrid.
3rd and 10, shotgun. Good protection…looked and waited for something downfield. Finally settled for Swaim open in flat for 7.
4th and 3- shotgun no huddle. Crossing route to Beasley. Good protection and route.
1st and 10- Shotgun- good protection…decides to scramble for 10 yards and first. May have had a play to Gallup deeper over the middle.
1st and 10- Empty- Slot blitz…looks like Zeke was the hot read but he is running worthless route. Really is a horrible route runner, not sure why we bother putting him out there. Throws into the oncoming blitz, inc.
2nd and 10- shotgun, motions to empty. Another slot blitz. This time hits Beasley for a 12 yard slant where the corner blitzed from.
1st and 10 no huddle, Gun. No one open. Throws to Jarwin on a Curl route over the middle. Double covered, probably shouldn’t have thrown it…but Jarwin did him no favors. Late off the line, horrible rounded route. Picked by ET on a circus catch. It is amazing to me how many plays where there is no one even trying to run routes. I would put this pick on Dak.
12th series-
1st and 10- Shotgun- Good pocket, good protection. Throws to Hurns on a sideline route that probably is a little short but apparently dropped by hurns or was out of bounds, not sure which. Not a great throw but certainly very catchable.
2nd and 10- shotgun- Probably had a couple of options but decides to throw to a lost zeke in the flat who again runs his route out of bounds. Inc.
3rd and 10- gun- Sacked for 12 yard loss. This one was on Dak. Floated right when he didn’t need to right into a defender. Had Gallup on a Deep dig if he stayed in the pocket.
4th and 22- Shotgun- Decent protection initially, then has DE drapped on his back…breaks away, rolls right and hits swaim for 20, game.
