I'm annoyed. I work as a tech support agent for a software company. I spend time on the phone explaining to customers how to use the product. It can get pretty complex, but I'm good at my job. My goal is to help people effectively use this software that works with their alarm systems. It's pretty serious since they're working to protect their homes and businesses.

There's another agent who supports a different product and doesn't receive that many calls and hence gets bored. He's an anime fan and spends the day watching those videos. They get loud and annoying. When I'm on the phone trying to explain the intricate details of how to set up the software so that the customer gets alerted if their home or business gets invaded, I hear a character getting attacked by his enemies and so he's screaming in Japanese and explosions are happening.

Competing with noise isn't in my job description. I'm annoyed by this person who doesn't appear to take his job all that seriously. Between calls you can do something productive. You can read up in training materials so that you're as competent as possible. In fact, every time we log into our computers, a screen comes up saying we're not allowed to watch non-work-related videos. He appears to just not give a crap. He doesn't get many calls and so he wants to watch videos. I get a lot of calls, and many are very complicated, and his stupid videos make my job harder.

I don't give a crap if he goofs off on the job. That's his problem if he gets into trouble. However, if it affects my work, I have a problem. I've talked with him before, asking him to turn it down and he does. But the next day he's at it again.

I'm frustrated. I'm not out to be a dick to people, but I'm trying to do the best job possible and this keeps interfering.

First off. I'm sorry for you. Not just for your ***hole co-worker, but doing tech support. Nothing worse than trying to explain how to do something on a computer to imbeciles.

As for your co-worker. I would report it. What I don't understand is don't you have management that sees/hears this happening in a call center? We have a call center at work (not tech support unless it's helping a customer on our website), but that would be grounds for immediate termination.

I guess it might depend on what kind of work you do. I work in sales and unless I am selling I don't get paid. If someone is distracting me or my customer by watching anime you're G D right I'm going to stop it any way I have to. Let me guess you work hourly?
I am an hourly paid worker but I still just don't have it in my DNA to act like that

If you are not going to go over his head about it.
If he is not going to listen to you about it.
If you are not going to put some fear into him about it.

Tell him if he insists on watching these videos while you are trying to work....put on some headphones so you...and more importantly, your customers, do not have to hear it.

After that, every time you get on the phone and he is playing the videos loud enough to distract you and your customer...flip him in the face with a rubber band...right on his lips should suffice...couple of those should get the point across. Then if he says he is going to tell on you over the issue you look at him, give him the throat slashing gesture and say...snitches get stitches esp if they have been asked nicely to keep it down but continue to act like something that rhymes with snitches and stitches.

Send him a virus that makes his computer start showing really loud porn. He won't be able to turn it off and the boss will come over and see porn on his computer. Then if they start asking questions, mention how he'd always try to hide his screen in a suspicious way. They'll think he regularly watched porn at work and he'll be fired.

He shouldn't have to say anything to the guy. His coworker made his choice to jack around and not do what he is supposed to do. Him screwing off at work is affecting an employee trying to do the right thing. It is 100% the right thing to do to tell his boss and having physical evidence seals the deal. 1 of 2 things will happen. Either they let the guy go, which solves the problem. Or the guy quits doing it, which also solves the problem.

You should NEVER be a rat..

Ask him to use earphones and tell him why because it is messing you up at work. If he ignores you or get confrontational go to the boss because maybe he is doing it on purpose to tick you off. If you have to move to another area, let it happen. He will eventually get what is coming to him .If he has annoyed you most likely he annoys others also and it will get back to the boss.

Tell him to watch his cartoons at home with the children because the adults are trying to get some work done.

Yeah as really think that co-worker needs an attitude adjustment. But if that does not help, talk to a boss.
