Tovya;2834217 said:Every time I hear a Pittsburgh Steelers fan whine about how they are the *REAL* America's Team, it makes me dislike their fan base even more.
Last season, I went to a local sports bar that is the DFW Steelers hangout to watch the Colts-Steelers game, and the experience made me detest them even more.
I'm not a HUGE Colts fan, but they've been my AFC team since I learned to walk--plus I've always been a big fan of Peyton Manning.
I don't know how many of you watched that game, but it was a great game.
Unfortunately for me, I was the ONLY Colts fan in the building amongst about 100 Steelers fans, and the entire night the entire bar was screaming obsenities at me, and mocking me.
It was cool, I'm a good sport, it's all in good fun...
but towards the last few drives of the game, Peyton came out and revealed his greatness once again, and had a comeback drive that's one for the books, and of course, I was happy to dish out the same thing they were throwing at me all night.
The bar went completely silent (except for me, I was estatic of course), and I came pretty darn close to being jumped by 100 angry Steelers fans. The owner of the bar told me, "you got balls man, but I'd get out of here if I were you".
And I did.
Anyway, the moral of the story is, Steelers fans are passionate--and that's a good thing under most circumstances, but they are the whiniest bunch of fans of any franchise of any sport.
They talk smack with the best of them, but whenever things aren't going their way, they don't like to have the same stuff thrown back at them.
Every Steeler fan I've ever met is orginally from the Pittsburgh area--but being in international business, I've met people in Japan, China, and elsewhere that love their Cowboys as much as I do.
We are a classy organization that transends the affiliation of being from the Metroplex--we are not America's team, we are the world's team.
And those miserable Steelers fans can shove their whiney crap attitudes where the sun don't shine as far as I'm concerned.

Intuitively, it's hard to imagine their fans outnumber those of the Dallas Cowboys or Pittsburgh Steelers.
It's also easy to understand why more fans across the country would identify with the Cowboys or Steelers.

The current version -- the Dallas Cowboys -- no longer deserves this distinguished title.
By Tim Graham
All of those franchises that have qualified to represent a nation -- New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Lakers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish -- also are among the most hated.
It's time to rescind the Cowboys' honor and turn it over to the Patriots.

Don't get so riled up. It's just a nickname which accurately reflects the largest American professional football fan following. That's all.firehawk350;2835221 said:Stupidest poll ever. It exists purely and solely to rile up fanbases and increase page hits. The guys at ESPN knew that somebody trying to give away the America's Team (as if nicknames are given away by 4 guys debating) moniker would get Cowboys fans all up in a tizzy and get them to visit the website to vote. IF somebody wanted to conduct a real survey, they would survey the general populace, not put it on a sports website. All this idiocy proves is Cowboys fans care more about being labelled America's Team than anybody else.
For the record, the Cowboys are definitely not the "world's" team. That is ********. The world doesn't care about the NFL and American football. People in Africa care about American football about as much as we care about the sport of curling.
As for me, I don't care if the Cowboys think they are America's Team. To think the Cowboys represent America (to who, other Americans?) is idiotic and only a moron could believe it. Maybe if somebody defined what qualities would comprise "America's Team", we could actually make a better judgment. America's Team, at this point, is just a way Cowboys fans can sit around and congratulate each other for being Cowboys fans.

I mean, everybody was so blinded by the whole reaction of "OMG, they are trying to say we aren't America's Team" that nobody pointed out that this was just all just a ploy to get more ad revenue. Regardless, I don't care if there are more Cowboys fans than any other team. What is that supposed to prove? Rap sells more albums than rock, does that mean it's a better style of music?
It never ceases to amuse me when fans of another team talk about the nickname "America's Team." You guys have no earthly clue what the hell you are talking about 90% of the time.firehawk350;2835221 said:Stupidest poll ever. It exists purely and solely to rile up fanbases and increase page hits. I didn't bold the part about doormats and how we were doormats and we still had the nickname, but I could have. It's about the interest the Cowboys stir up around the football world, just like the interest America stirs up around the real world.Hostile said:I have some advice for those who get upset by this hatred and bias. It's real simple, embrace the hatred. Soak it up. Revel in it. Let it put a smile on your face that can't be wiped off no matter how hard they rub. Hell, dance if you've got rhythm, or even if you don't but could give a crap who's watching.
Do anything but whine about some new hatred or bias. It isn't new. Not by a long shot.
Some of us have embraced this hatred for years. On cold nights it keeps us warm. You want to know why we accept it? Because no one hates a doormat. Be serious for a minute, how many of you have ever heard of someone who hates the Detroit Lions? They're a doormat. Well, folks no one wipes their feet on the Dallas Cowboys. We kick back. With spurs on our boots.
It's real simple math. No one hates the doormats because they don't matter. They don't sell. There's no sex appeal.
Folks, the Dallas Cowboys are sexy, and sex sells. Everything about the Cowboys sells. We're right smack dab in the middle of the country and the football world revolves around us. Don't believe it? Look at the TV ratings and do the math. We sell. The Dallas Cowboys being good is good for the NFL. Bet on it.
Why do other nations hate America? Because we're the biggest, baddest cats on the planet. There's more money here. There's more excitement. There's more opportunity. None of that is bad, so why do they hate us? Because looking up hurts their necks, and they're cranky as hell.
If America is the cream of the crop, then America's Team is too. That's what that nickname was meant to portray. The best. People hate the best. Let 'em.
Haven't you ever noticed how that nickname infuriates some people? It's just a freaking nickname for crying out loud. No one decries the "Purple People Eaters." How can cannibalism not be offensive? Because there's no prestige in it. No one is trying to get that nickname. America's team? Everyone wants it. Too damn bad, that's ours. Keep your grubby hands off or you'll pull back a bloody stump.
Opposing team's fans will tell you that the nickname is offensive, but look how many of them want it for themselves. This year we were encouraged to loan the nickname to New Orleans because of their rebuilding from Katrina. The team in our Nation's capital wants the nickname. The Steelers have laid claim to it. So have the Packers. So have the Jets and Giants after 9/11. So have the Patriots. It's a redundant theme. Not even baseball teams like the Braves or Yankees have been able to pry that moniker away from the Cowboys. Nor the Lakers or Celtics in basketball.
You want to know why none of them ever get to use that nickname? They can't earn it. Love us or hate us, the Cowboys earned the nickname America's Team. How can I say this? Simple, have we ever lost it? Even when we were doormats the name was used. The media still loves to use it.
Why did NFL Europe do so crappy then? Besides, in Britain, there's a close enough connection to the US that you could fill a stadium. Even so, that hardly backs up that the rest of the world cares about football given it's a single game once a year. The Super Bowl attracts about 150 million viewers worldwide (in 230 countries). I think we can safely say though that most of these are Americans or Americans who are in foreign countries.Ren;2835269 said:I was only pointing out that your "the rest of the world don't care" assumption is flawed, as overseas TV ratings and attendance easily backs up the opposite

The nickname has NOTHING to do with "representing America." It is a metaphor, a comparison to a known quality, an allusion to something else, or an analogy. Whatever you wish to call it. In reality it is just a nickname given to us by a media outlet. There's nothing sinister about it. Nothing hidden. Yet so many of you still don't get it.
Hostile;2835275 said:Here's something I posted almost 3 years ago. It is still relevant to the point today. A little advice I like to call "Embrace the Hatred." I am going to bold a couple of parts so that it hopefully sinks in for you finally.

Does any other team affect TV ratings the way the Cowboys can? No.
Does any other country affect world policy the way America can? No.
Does everyone love the Cowboys? No.
Does everyone love America? No.
Hostile;2835275 said:Are you getting it yet? Is it finally sinking in? Yes, to a degree we care about the nickname. It amuses the hell out of us that so many of you get your panties in a wad over it. It amuses us how many of you claim it is offensive on one hand and then try to explain to us why your team should have it. Wait, if it's offensive, why do you want it? Oh right, it has some prestige to it that you want. We get it. The question is...do you?
