in-his-prime, pre-achilles Kevin Smith vs. Terence Newman. Who would you rather have? I love Newman, but Smith shut down Jerry Rice when Rice was at the top of his game.

Hard to say.

The teams Kevin Smith played on were so much better than the ones Terence Newman is on or ever will be on.

Terence Newman is also playing at a pretty high level in an era where Cornerbacks are very limited in what they can do.

Not hard to say at all!!! K. Smith before his injury was as good an all-around cornerback as any corner I've ever seen. Too dang bad too, because he had just gotten to where he was almost unbeatable. Stuck on guys like glue!

I would love to have both but would take in-his-prime, pre-achilles Kevin Smith over just about anyone except in-his-prime, prime time.

Kevin Smith was never the same after his injury. The Kevin Smith that shot down Rice is a different player from the one after the injury.

Too hard to say for me. Kevin Smith pre-injury didn't last long whereas Newman has been doing it for 5 years. Obviously pre-injury Smith was a damn good corner, but when comparing him versus Newman I would need to see more of Smith to judge, but that's not possible.

YAKUZA

pup played with a chip on his shoulder. He went up against Jerry Rice, spit on him, pulled on his jersey, talked about his mother, did everything and completely took Jerry Rice out of his game.

I loved that guy..

Pup was outstanding and I would not want the job of making a choice between the two. But I'm thinking pup over TNew......slightly.

Remember how after the injury he started getting called for pass interference at least once a game. Then it was like the refs were just looking for him to commit PI. I remember thinking then that he was marked by the refs.

Smith was good, but he played 12 yards off the receiver almost always.

Newman is better than good. He is special. Even Deion got beat once in awhile. We need to count our blessing with Newman. It's not likely we will see better soon.

Two different eras as regards the rules on pass coverage and what CBs are allowed to do. Just no way to tell now.

What he said...

Kevin Smith was one of the top CBs in the game. Now Newman may get there eventually but he isn't there yet.

But the question was about Smith before his injury.

Some interesting responses here. I may need to generate some more discussion points.

Newman.

When Smith started playing Dallas had a very good pass rush that could take pressure off of any corner. Newman did not have that luxury when he joined the team. When Newman started playing Dallas had little pass rush, but he made a big difference in the defense. Newman's play and impact to the defense is what inspired Mike Shanahan to trade Clinton Portis in order to get a top corner in Champ Baily.

That is the biggest difference- Dallas had a very good to great pass rush when Smith was at his best. NEWMAN has NEVER had that- occasionally this year we have had a pretty good pass rush- BUT only occasionally.
In the previous years we had a LOUSY pass rush.

Different era....corners were allowed to breathe on wideouts back than.
