Another Look at the Herschel Walker Deal

We have often reflected on the fact that we got all those players and draft picks for one Herschel Walker.

When looked at from that perspective is was quite an impressive deal pulled of by Jimmy and Jerry.

But when you look back to the 1985 Draft and realize that Walker was taken by us in the 5th round it is even more impressive.

We got all those players and picks for a 5th round draft pick.

I think the best trade we've made since was definitely trading our first round draft pick to Buffalo. As pissed as I was at the time.

We essentially traded J.P. Losman for Julius Jones, Marcus Spears, and Drew Bledsoe.

I think that when the story is written and finished that people will talk about how big a factor this trade was. Especially if Bledsoe gets us to the super bowl. We have 3 potential pro bowlers (not saying Spears is going to the pro bowl this year), for a qb who is struggling mightily right now (as young qbs do)

True but it was due to him going to the USFL so Dallas took a chance that Walker would return to the NFL. Had the USFL not folded chances are he may never have moved on to the NFL

Other than the Walker trade I would have to say the best trade the Cowboys made was with Seattle in which we got Dorsett

Absolutely right Dooms, which is why Jimmy and Jerry, who routinely get the sole credit for that deal, have to give a bow to Schramm and Landry who had the foresight to take a flyer on him with a 5th round draft pick.

No doubt Tom and Tex would use draft picks to take chances on player. We used a late pick to get Roger Staubach, we also took a chance on Carl Lewis but as we know he never tried football.

In one of the dumbest moves in franchise history the Seahawks trade their top pick in the draft to the Dallas Cowboys for 3 2nd round picks. The Cowboys would use the pick to select RB Tony Dorsett who would have a Hall of Fame career. In their 2nd season the Seahawks shifted from the NFC West to the AFC West, as they lost 5 of their first 6 games. On October 30th the Seahawks would earn their 2nd win of the season when QB Jim Zorn returned from an injury and threw 4 TD passes in a 56-17 win over the Buffalo Bills at the Kingdome. Two weeks later the Seahawks would get their first shutout over the Jets 17-0 in New York. The Seahawks would go on to finish with a 5-9 record, winning their final 2 games in the process.

We also got Chad Hennings in like the 11th round and had to wait 2 or 3 years for him to be available.

Don't forget Chad Hennings as well - wasn't he a late round pick in 88?

Another risk vs reward move by the Cowboys. Back then most 11th round picks were not going to do much so why not take a chance

There were two times in all the years I've followed the Cowboys when I heard news on the radio and I felt like jumping up and down for joy :)

1. When the Cowboys made the trade that would land them Dorsett
2. When it was confirmed that the Cowboys were going to take Aikman with the #1 overall in 1989.

I still believe in taking blue chip players whenever possible. They don't all pan out, many flame out, but man when they work out, it means YEARS of good times for Cowboys fans.

Didn't somebody trace that 5th round pick for Herschel back to a trade of Butch Johson to Houston for Mike Renfro and a 5th rounder?

Its funny, but I was in the 7th grade and remember where I was at the moment I heard on the radio that Dallas drafted TD.

I think we may have also got Crayton out of that.

you could argue that Ware was in that too. We would have gotten Ware or Spears if we only had 1 pick. Also, unless Buffalo had a top 10 pick for us, our draft probably would have been similar this year

Geez this makes me feel old! Most people my age talk about where they were when they heard Kennedy got shot!

The only time I ever yelled for joy was when we selected Emmit. I had a massive feeling he was going to be awesome.
I liked the Dat pick also - what a steal.

I love Walker for personally making the DALLAS COWBOYS the team of the 90's!

My best friend is a Buffalo fan and he talked all kinds of crap about Bledsoe. Now I'm just shoving it back in his face.

Buffalo...Thank you!!!
