Another "tipping" controversy

Okay, so this delivery guy in NY started a website to ***** and moan about customers who gave him lousy tips. He was subsequently fired for doing so. He asserts that he should be tipped like a waiter--15% of the total bill--because he's providing a "service" and the fact that the customer is saving time and money by not getting the food himself. What say you? Do you tip your delivery guy a certain percentage based on the final tab, or just give him/her a couple of bucks no matter how expensive the order is?

I give $2-3 bucks regardless but it generally ends up being 15-20%.

I usually tip $3. Bringing 3 pizzas vs 1 makes no difference. I hate the % of the total bill argument. Delivering a $5 dollar pizza is no harder than delivering a $100 pizza.

I just thought it was arrogant of him to compare himself to a waiter/waitress, who are on their feet all night, making multiple trips to the table, serving each party individually, etc. I don't doubt that he's had cheap customers on his route, but 15% sounds excessive.

I give the pizza guy $3-5.00 to come down the block with a pie that costs me $15-16.00 and that's more than enough. It'd be the same regardless of the price I'm paying for food. If the Chinese place delivered, which costs much more, I'd give him the same.

Everyone has a cross to bear. A tip is supposed to be optional gravy for a paying job well done, not an obligation, especially considering a lot of places tack on a delivery fee. I'd stop ordering from the place if the guy complained.

Well, I suppose if you are comparing a waiter/waitress with a delivery guy, the delivery guy can make the case it costs more to bring the food to him because he has to use his gas and his car to make the delivery. Also, you have to ask yourself, would you deliver a pizza to complete stranger for 3 bucks?

Myself, I always tip a minimum of 5.00. Just seems right. Now I don't order a lot for delivery but I have and occasionally do.

As for in a restaurant, I always let the waiters start out at a 30% tip and let them work their way backwards.

I usually tip $3 for delivery on bills typically ranging from $12 to $25 depending on what I order. Considering they already charge you a $2.50 delivery charge I think that is more then fair.

Wow, $5 for a pizza delivery guy? Sheesh!

I tip $2 to a delivery guy, 20% to a good waiter/waitress, and it goes down from there if the service is poor. The other day at my favorite Thai restaurant, which I tip well at most of the time, my guests food came out and I had to wait another 10 minutes before mine came out, they never refilled our waters, and didn't ask if we wanted desert or anything else, just dropped the check off when we finally flagged them down for water refills. And we were 2 of 10 total customers. $2 tip for you, because you earned it.

Exactly.....if they are adding a delivery charge I'll tip a couple of dollars max

If you can afford to eat out in a nice resteraunt or order 20$ worth of pizza then you should tip at least 2-3 bucks or more for a delivery and 15% or more for good service while dining in.
If you cant afford this please go to McDonalds and look at the dollar menu.

disagree completely. i always give a tip if i'm eating out - don't remember the last time i ordered in - but its a bonus for the staff. its up to the restaurant/bar owner to pay their staffs wages not up to me, i'm paying over the odds for your food or drink because you have costs such as rent, bills and staffing.

Actually im not sure exactly which companys but im pretty sure pizza hut and papa johns spilt their delivery fee between the driver and the company{2.00 delivery fee 1.00 to driver 1.00 to pizza hut}.
The fees were put in place to cover for the cheapskates who order 20 bucks worth of pizza and dont tip a dime.:laugh2:

Not my problem

why should you tip? No one tips us for our jobs?

I do but not because I agree with it but just because everyone does.

My old lady tends to be psycho when it comes to tipping though, gives far more than me and she is usually the one who pays for the pizza/chinese food etc when it's delivered.

as an aside i prefer going to get the food myself. plenty of takeaway places within a few minutes walk from where i live and if the foods going to be 15 minutes or so then its a good excuse to nip into the pub for a sneaky pint. :beer1:

Because the companies deliberately pay them less based on the fact they should make a large sum of their salary from tips.
