Anthony Becht disses Gosselin's evaluation of Escobar pick

I wish we saw more of Escobar. I'm frustrated their coaching staff hasn't found a way to get him more involved.

Becht's basic premise is correct.

16 receptions in two years for a 2nd round draft pick TE is not nearly enough production for a team with some many holes where that 2nd round pick could have been invested differently.

agreed.... just because you're not being used, doesn't mean you're not good.......

now technically is the pick a waste because the cowboys aren't using him?.... fair opinion.

Important disclaimer - Anthony Becht trained Gavin Escobar in his combine/draft preparation at the IMG Academy.

That being said, any issue with the Escobar pick is with how he is used, not with his talent/value where he was selected.

I thought he would have been a good option for Weeden. I know Beasley was getting open a lot, but Escobar is a big target and has a wide catch radius. I think he could have pulled in some of those inaccurate throws that Weeden was making.

It seems like the coaching staff just refuses to rely on players other than Dez, Murray, and Witten. If they can't get it done, nobody is going to.

This is a good point. Even a guy like Beasley who seems to have no problem getting open each and every time gets limited reps. I dont get it

The kid has some skills - he is tall and has great hands and looks like he is improving on his blocking. He had his best game and then disappeared since. I haven't even seen him on the field lined up. Maybe his knee is causing problems again? He is a weapon that when healthy - and from his recent performances when given a chance - can be an asset to the team.

That draft is looking pretty damn solid IMO.

This......If given the more opportunities I think Gavin produces, its up the coaches to get players like him and Beasly more involved in the game plan.

I hate to say it, but I agree with Gosselin. Why the heck did they draft this kid so high if they have no plans to maximize his skill-set. It isn't wasted because of Escobar's ability, it is wasted because they never put him on the field. He is averaging 9 plays a game the last two games.

It isn't like they are showing any signs of pushing Witten out the door, so it does look like they could have done a lot better there.

Nods, that pick he threw at Witten, Beasley was wide open in the middle of the field. :/

Saw the blurb on Dallasnews and didn't even click because I know Goose is an idiot.

Escobar can only play when called upon and his value was correct in the draft.
Witten and Hanna have played well but so has Escobar when he has gotten the chance.

I would have played Escobar far more often as my 3rd WR last week over 5'8" Beasley since the nickel guy is Honey Badger.

I'd have liked to force Zona to get that nickel off the field and play a LB to match up with Escobar. OR had the TE for blocking.
Esco is a mediocre blocker but certainly better than Beasley.
That was a coaching fail.

Rick Gosselin is an idiot. The only thing he knew how to do was get information from teams and create a mock draft the day before the draft that was reasonably accurate.

Anytime his own opinion is involved, the outcome is terrible.

This couldn't be more spot on. I mean right on the money.

How much of a fail is it, though, if the guy you had playing in his place was open much of the game and your QB just didn't get him the ball because he was locked onto Dez the entire time?

I thought Escobar was probably going to be one of the players Weeden had a rapport with, too, but if you're beating slot coverage fairly consistently with Beasley, I have a hard time blaming the coaches for not bringing in a guy just because he might get even more open.

even more a fail in that scenario.
if they are just blocking you take the 6'7" 260 pound guy every time.

Esco was always the better choice as I tweeted Broaddus BEFORE the game.

Beasley is small with a very limited route tree.

In that match up Beasley was a stupid choice.

Beasley is the most overrated player on this roster by a factor of 1000.

I actually agree with you that Escobar was the better choice in this case. I can't get behind a guy being a 'stupid' choice if that guy's open in critical situations and the QB just doesn't get him the ball. The receivers can't do any more than run their routes, be open, and catch it if it comes to them. The coaches can't do any more than call plays that get receivers open. If the QB can't or won't make the throws, then the only thing stupid is the QB's decision making.

Well I do agree as of right now it is a wasted pick. That pick was a luxury we didn't need. Tight end could've been addressed 2 or 3 years from now. That being said, I have no doubt in my mind he can play. He contributes when he's out there. But yea its technically a wasted pick that should've went towards the defense.

.

Beasley was having zero trouble getting open last week. That was a Weeden fail, not a coaching fail.
