The Dallas Cowboys raised eyebrows Monday when they used their franchise tag on linebacker Anthony Spencer for a second consecutive year.

For a team dealing with substantial salary-cap issues, it was a surprising move. Around The League colleague Gregg Rosenthal thought it was classic Cowboys ... and he didn't mean it as a compliment.

Now we're learning the Cowboys could have other plans for Spencer. Citing a team source, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday on "NFL Total Access" that Dallas is open to trading Spencer and his $10.6 million salary if a suitor presents itself.

I think this is a good move by the cowboys.

He is too good to let go without anything in return and if they come up with a long term contract then great.

I really doubt Dallas is going to trade him, but I do think you don't close the door just in case someone makes you a deal you can't refuse.

I think there's almost no chance we trade him.

What I can't decide is whether or not we're really trying to solve him to a long term deal, or if we're using the tag to get a read on how he manages the transition to SDE. Add a DT this year and a DE next and buy some time to retool the line.

Its probably a moot point, I think they will sign him to a long term deal pretty soon. If they get Spencer signed to a new deal and Romo to a new extension, then they will actually have about $10 million to spend in free agency.

Mickey said they were alotted about $5 million to sign picks last yr and this year they are picking lower, so even if you use the same $5 million for picks that still leaves $5 million for free agency.

We can get a pretty good FS with $5 million in FA.

They only need about 1.5m for the rookies since the 6 lowest salaries, around 3m, will have to be cut.

Honestly, I think this is pure speculation and Spencer will suit up for the Cowboys. I for one wouldn't mind getting a top 15 pick for him but I always wouldn't mind him returning and I think he'd be just as solid in the 4-3 as he was in the 3-4.

FWIW, Broaddus (I think it was Broaddus) said yesterday on Talking Cowboys that he had word we're not intending to trade him at all.

A first or even a second seem unrealistic for Spencer. I would be happy for a third. I would also be happy keeping him. I think he will be better in as a de in a 43. Of course, we have to see how he holds up against the run on the line, but how much different are his new responsibilities going to be from what he was used to? I saw him pretty stout against the same tackles that he will be lining up against now. That work got him in the pro bowl. He is going to gain some weight, as should Ware, to be able to hold up a little better. I think we are keeping him and a lot of you guys are going to be very happy come next season.

The reality is, IMO, that we can not afford to keep him at the 10 million plus, or what ever the number is. Now, before everybody jumps up and claims that there is plenty of cap, I believe that this is a posture statement by the team and nothing more. We can restructure but that's not saving money necessarily. That's pushing money back and the team knows that's a zero sum game eventually.

I think we would be happy to keep him if we could negotiate a deal that pays him something in the area of 8 million over, say 4 years with say 24 guaranteed. Now, if we can't work something, then I do believe the Cowboys would trade him but I don't believe they would trade him for just a 3rd. I believe they would keep him and pay him the Tag and try to negotiate a long term deal before next season. I expect that once he moves to Strong Side DE in our new scheme, he is not going to get the Sacks he did last season. The market for him, should he play out next season under the tag, will be softer and so, the demand will be less, theorectically. I think the Cowboys will entertain a deal for a second or some combination of a 3rd and a player or additional picks if they can't sign a deal that is friendly to the team but I don't see them just moving him for a mid round pick. The team is taking a bit of a gamble right now and there is no point in taking risk unless you are going to get value for it.

I agree with everyone else on here. Anything less then a second round pick I'd keep him.

How do we get a good FA for 5 million if we absolutely must pay our good FA 10 million plus?

Once he gets his long term contract he will turn in to just another average guy again. Jerry will again lock up some guy for the long term who becomes a mediocre contributor. He has been mostly average, admitted in the past he didn't give his all, and had one career year. Yup, Jerry has fallen in love again with that one year. Based on his history, any savvy GM would trade him. Over 10 mil for him if they don't work out a long term deal ? Really ?

Maybe we should wait for him to sign a long-term deal before complaining about the long-term deal he hasn't signed?

Really don't think we trade him and if we do I hope it is for a decent pick or two but would imagine the pick would be lower than anyone would like because that's how we roll. :(

Ed werder just answered me on twitter saying he believes that he won't get traded. Seems more likely the tag was to get a deal done

totally agree. people live in Madden NFL too long. he will be 30. he is looking for a payday. so who is going to give up a top draft pick, that would be with the team for 5 years in the cheap, and young. for a guy, that's good not great. and 30 and looking for his last contract!!!

if we get a 3rd, we have done good.

Raiders are in need of a pass rusher in Spencer's mold.

Send em out west for a pair of firsts!
