maybe he is what he is just a good run defender and not really a explosive pass rusher like Ware. If you look back in college(in 2006) he had like 93 tackles as a defensive end, Spencer's 93 tackles in 2006 were the most ever by a defensive end during the Joe Tiller era (1997-present), topping the previous high of 71 by Rosevelt Colvin in 1997" www.cbssports.com.

I think that's why he get mostly singled because he looks more for the run except pass rushing situations where he just is not really explosive.

IDK what else for the reason why spencer is not that good at rushing the passer.

I think he is looking to rush the passer and is out of position a lot on run plays to his side. He's losing containment too often. And he's not getting to the passer either. I'd put Butler in on that side more than on Ware's side.

ya i kno i was xpecting a monster season from him this yr. as i was xpecting a monster yr from all the Cowboys.....DISAPOINMENT

The main reason IMO is coaching. Spencer runs himself out of position. Secondly, it seems he doesn't use his strength to his advantage. He should take lessons from Orakpo. He needs to learn how to bullrush.

Spencer seems to always arrive a step or two late when he rushes the QB. He came on strong late last season and appeared to be on the verge of taking the next step and becoming an elite player but that hasn't happened. I never thought he would be a Demarcus Ware but I did think he would be a Greg Ellis and so far that hasn't happened.

you could be right about the coaching or lack there of:laugh2:
spencer is strong as a bull so i dont know why he doesn't use his strength its like he try's to be too much fitness and not physical. Look at lamaar woodley for the steelers who many though spencer would be way better than him. Woodley plays with aggression and is just physical out there.

Yep.

Although since Garrett has been coach that has changed. And he's now making more plays, too.

Funny how that stuff works like that.

Sometimes a run of great games is a sign that a player's taken the next step. Sometimes it's just a run of great games.

Butler has played some and hasn't done much. I know everyone loves the backup more than the starter, but Butler isn't exactly killing it with his opportunities either.

Nobody strong like bull but Igor!

In yesterday's Press Conference Jason Garrett was asked specifically about Ratliff and Spencer and what statistically is a drop in performance. He said teams are attacking the Cowboys differently which has limited the chances those two players were getting last year. Their level of play is still ranked high by the team.

While this maybe true, (attacking them differently) I have seen Ratliff, Ware, and Spencer get pushed backwards several yards at times.

Now, that was before the coaching change and maybe it was just an effort deal. Either way though. Their play clearly wasn't as dominate as we've seen from them before.

He has seemed comparable in the pass rushing department - sacks or no sacks, but it's his typically phenomenal run defense technique that seems to have suffered. Maybe it is how teams are scheming to prevent his effectiveness, but one way or another he HAS been less effective defending the run this year.

I am not saying this to offend. If I do, I hope you will forgive me.

This is the kind of crap that literally just drives me crazy about fans. Guess what, the guys on the other side of the ball are professional football players too. That means that even a player as dominant as Ware is going to get beat from time to time.

Name me one player in the History of the NFL who never got beat.

No one can. Yet that is what fans expect of our Cowboys on every play. Like doing their job is somehow easy and if they can't do it perfectly it means they are stupid.

It is beyond unrealistic and it is exactly why I rarely participate in the weekly "get rid of ________" threads.

I'm sorry to go off on a rant, but that just rubbed me the wrong way.

Edit...While I am already losing my mind I might as well really go full on stupid. DOMINANT. Their play was dominant, not dominate. Noun, not verb. So many people do that here that it just blows my mind.

I hope Garrett is saying that just to keep things peaceful for now and that's not his true assessment.

In the first 8 games, I don't know how anybody could rank Spencer highly. He was completely undisciplined, his technique sucked and wasn't making plays. Those are usually the main 3 ways you grade a player and he wasn't good in any of those facets and it killed the team. And it's no coincidence that we are 27th in defending runs at the right end, which is usually his position.

I think he's been far more disciplined with his gap responsibility since Garrett has been coach and now has started making plays (because y'know, there's a reason why coaches design defenses the way they do). But one thing I was hoping with Garrett is *if* Spencer started getting greedy and undisciplined, then I wanted to see Garrett bench him. So far Spencer hasn't been since Garrett is the HC, but I can't fathom anybody ranking him highly in the first half of the season.

That normally happens during football games, unless the player is immortal.

Maybe he should work on his patented run around and away from the tackle technique.

Altho what he does is nowhere near as bad as what Tuck or Umenyiora (can't remember which) did last week.

I'm aware that everyone gets beaten from time to time. I was talking about the players consistency; not necessarily a single instance. Excuse my usage typo. ;)

sorry but Spencer has not played that well this year especially compared to how he ended last year. But that could also be more evidence that our LB coaching also needs an upgrade. When a team starts confronting a player differently, its up to the coaching staff to figure out what advantages you can have now that they are playing that particular player in a different way. If they are shading to the outside, then work on inside moves and vice versa. I saw very little from Spencer to show that he was compensating in any way.
