Anthony Spencer

6 sacks one season...oh mah gawd can anyone say championship? i root for spencer but i don't see him do much

You guys are too optimistic. We will lose all 16, the bye week, all three weeks of the playoffs, the Super Bowl and the pro bowl. 0-22, mark it down.

He didn't even have an excellent season....he had an excellent 6-8 game stretch....much of that attributed to his sack explosion.

He's been fairly consistent outside of that.....he gets decent pressure, although not overwhelming. He's a solid player, and one that coaches and players have far more respect for than some clueless fans. He certainly isn't a major reason our defense is underperforming IMO.

He isn't, and likely never will be, a highlight reel player....and thusly will always be a target for our fans.

Kind of like Greg Ellis was.

On the nosey.

Yeah, I like the Greg Ellis comparison too.

I think the expectation a lot of fans (and I include myself here) had was that Spencer would step in and be a big time dominant pass rusher.

That pretty obviously hasn't happened, and at this stage I doubt it will. That said, if you simply accept Spencer for what he is, he's pretty darn good.

I find people's reaction to Spencer to be similar to that of Marcus Spears as well. You can do a lot worse than Spears and Spencer.

I think the real issue is that if you're going to run a 3-4, you need impact LB's. We presently have one LB that would classify as an "impact" player, the other guys are can be a bit of a mixed bag at times.

If you had a big time ILB playing next to Spencer, no one would ever complain about him.

Here's the deal, Spencer's ardent "supporters" don't want to argue the point that Spencer is not a dynamic pass rushing threat that we all want and expect. Why? Because they can't.

Instead, they run a diversion and talk about how great a run defender and overall solid player he is. Funny thing though, most people generally agree with that.

The Greg Ellis comparison is not an apt one, because Greg Ellis didn't have a problem rushing the passer. He was highly effective opposite of DWare.

Now, the go-to canned response is going to be "yeah, but Ellis was nowhere near the run-stopper Spencer is..." And in doing so, they've completely missed the issue again: Folks wanna see more out of Spencer as a pressure/pass rushing threat.

Rob Ryan needs to use Spencer in different ways, like Capers does for Clay Matthews. Last night we saw him blitz and he got a sack on Mcnabb. That's the stuff we need. When you line Spencer 1 on 1 and ask him to beat the RT off the line of scrimmage, he usually can't do it. Play him to his strengths.

As for Victor Butler, I also want to see them rush Butler more in a 3-point stance. He's a smaller guy, I think he'd be even more explosive coming off the 3-pt stance instead of standing up. I'd also have him watch tapes of Freeney/Mathis.

Good point.

I'm looking forward to seeing Ryan utilize Spencer in more creative ways than Wade ever did. That should help.

The irony. If only newnationcb would join this thread and you two geniuses could argue that point against eachother.

What are you babbling about? Why don't you put the cymbals down for a second and make a coherent argument like a good little monkey.

It's like I was saying...you put anyone else on the other side of DeMarcus Ware and his 13 sack/year average, and they're going to appear to be "garbage" to the uninformed, unknowledgeable football fan.

Anthony Spencer isn't that bad. In fact, he's actually quite good. He has the respect of opponents both on the playing field and opposing coaching staffs around the league. I'm not sure why people can't accept this.

Again, not everyone can be DeMarcus Ware, or even half the beast that DeMarcus Ware is. You play opposite of a first-ballot Hall of Famer of course you look average.

Awwww, fanboy mad. You don't have the brainpower to even recognize a coherent argument, let alone comprehend one. Which is why you just chirp around..."hey guys, I exist...please pay attention to me."

Lmao...you're so weak. Is this what a San Jose State education buys? So sad.

You keep screaming at that wall.

I'll keep laughing.

You still haven't provided a coherent argument, though, so even if you're saying that he's chirping you're doing just the same, songbird.

So you're laughing at your computer? Do you find yourself screaming at yourself in public because I'm in your head?

How's that shipping and receiving job working for ya? You just keep plugging away boy, in a year or two they'll have you up to $12 an hour soon enough.

You hold yourself in much higher regard than anyone else on this forum. These tantric displays of self importance and false expertise are extremely transparent and rather comical.

I'm sure it makes you feel better to throw these lame *** insults at me, assuming things that are not only way off mark, but seem like pretty obvious projections of your own pathetic lifestyle....but I assure you, there aren't many people impressed by your chest thumping gibberish...outside of a few other uneducated dolts that think being "real" makes you smarter than the people that don't freak out at the first sign of adversity.

I'm actually enjoying this. ;)

Spencer didn't play the run very well on the first drive. They kept running at him and away from Ware.

Nah...we suck. None of our players can tackle. They're all soft. I read it here. 0-16.

I have to remember for a shipping & receiving clerk, the above quote is a rock-solid, bulletproof form of argument.

To answer your question, yes, you are still a fanboy. Remember you proudly admitted as much in previous conversation. Why look for affirmation from me?

The fact you agree with me on certain points only credits you with a half functional brain to grasp reason. Like a monkey that understands it's looking at itself in a mirror.

Love the irony...and thank you for confirming my last post. Keep it coming Bubbles.

What's wrong with being a shipping and receiving clerk? They work, too.
