With the Doug Free situation out of the way, does Spencer now become the priority? I thought I read something that they have until 15 June to work out a long term deal and if not they can't talk to him until the season is over.

I think if they don't sign him by the 15th (if this is correct), then they probably won't sign him at all. Thoughts??

Let him turn 30 next year, play out the tag in 2013 and cut ties next year.

I don't want any part of Spencer long-term. This organization needs to learn how to cut ties with players a year or two early instead of a year or two late.

It's basically what's gotten them in cap you know what.

With Spencer about to turn 30 the thinking is probably there may not be such a hot market for him next year and they may take their chances there against the highest bidder.

Another issue may be how well Spencer fits in the new scheme at LDE. If you look at the Seahawks who Kiffen says plays the closest version of the Tampa2 that he wants to implement here the SDE plays a 5-tech. Spencer is most definitely not a 5-tech.

So I think they have decided since they are still far apart in his valuation that it is best to let the season play out and try again next offseason but without the franchise tag. My guess is Spencer will be kicking himself for not letting Jerry bid against himself while he was franchised. It is well known that Jerry overpays his own guys so if Spencer wants more than that his demands are probably outgaeous, IMO.

I actually would much rather be rid of Spencer and Rat and try to find one good youngish DL in FA and hopefully add another worthy one with a first round draft pick. I would be okay with trading up for one if need be the case as a major youth injection is required unless Lissemore (very unlikely) or Crawford (possible but improbable) really develop as pass rushers this season.

I'd also much rather bring in a young DL in FA then sign Spencer to a bloated contract that will cause us to release him in 2-3 years with a ton of dead money.

Yessir. Spencer has Marion Barber, Terence Newman, Ken Hamlin, and Miles Austin written all over him.

Agreed. Invest that in your young players like lee, Carter, dez,, etc.

Yeah, I hope they let him test the market next year and only match if it's no more than 3 years and for reasonable money. If a couple of things work out this year, they can spend a high pick next year to replace him and not have $9-10 million tied up at DE opposite Ware.

Agree. I don't see how the team saves any money by signing him now as compared to re-signing him as a Free Agent next year.

Even if he has a great year, the Strong-Side DE in Kiffin's scheme is probably not going to have great sack numbers. Without great sack numbers, a DE probably won't get great contract offers.

The fact that Spencer will be a 30 year old Free Agent next year should also keep his market value down.

Waiting until after the 2013 season to make a decision on giving Spencer a contract seems like a safe bet.

He's gone after this year. Sean lee is the top guy needed to resign

Spencer is ONLY 29. He is not old. He is coming off his best season and teamed with Ware form one of the best DE duos in the league. If you re-do his contract now, you instantly get 5-6m in salary cap relief. They can then roll that over to next year to practically eliminate his cap charge in 2014. Plus you get to eat 20% of his signing bonus this year. A 5/40m backloaded deal gets us 3 years a star DE and allows the team to draft another OL in the first next year.

It's not a zero sum game. They can easily do both. Lee won't get top LB money. He is solid, but unspectacular player. Let him finish a full year before we start comparing him to Willis or Lewis. A 10m SB probably gets it done with Lee. He gets his lump sum, life changing money, but Dallas gets 3-4 years of slightly below average salary. A big salary cap hit won't come until 2016, when a Spencer extension will almost be over.

Sean Lee is more than a solid player. You do not have to undermine one player to sunshine pump another.

I LOVE Sean Lee but the Cowboys would be nuts to pay out $30M of guaranteed money to him considering his injury history -- absolutely nuts.

Be prepared for it. It's going to happen.

Because of his injuries and missed playing time they will get him at a bargain similar to signing Rat to his 2nd contract. I'm sure they will have an understanding about redoing the deal later on if he outplays it. (which is also similar to Rat)

I was hoping for a replacement to groom in the draft this year but hopefully next year we spend a 1st - 3rd rounder on the position unless Crawford steps up and wows us...
