Anthony Spencer's value

I think he's worth about $4 million a year. 4 years $20 million that's a bit back-loaded would be a sufficient salary.

The fact he's going to pull in at least 5 years $35 million means you have to let the man walk.

I let Spencer go already in my head.

The Cowboys had a full year to present and negotiate deals. Spencer went out and was far less than sensational yet they still couldn't get a deal done.

To me that says Dallas hasn't been willing to pay what Spencer's agent wants.

Seldom does it make sense to allow a guy to hit unrestricted free agency. and while there is a franchise tag as a tool, it would be probably the biggest spare ever franchised if that occurred.

As posted in another article Spencer is probably not even in the top half of starting OLBs much less top 5.

The thought you can't replace 6 sacks and 60 tackles is just wrong. You may need to rely on more than one OLB to get that job done but it is hardly impossible.

I hardly hate Spencer. I just think he is a very average type player who you can't pay like a star. And the thought of buying one year at a premium smacks of desperation and very bad team planning.

which could very well be the situation the Cowboys find themselves in

Who else you gonna go by?

And in addition, the personnel moves the club has made over the last couple years have been on the upswing.

This is why I found the second article, 'Can a rookie step right in and fill Anthony Spencer’s shoes?,' so compelling. Every one of the five 3-4 OLBs drafted in the first four rounds of the 2011 draft had comparable production to Spencer. Perhaps the 2011 draft was an aberration in this regard, but this seems to clearly contradict the over-valuation of Spencer.

yeah that was really brilliant work they did on the interior of the O line this last season

He gives up the edge WAY too many times in rushing situations that allow the opposing offense to rip easy 10+ yard runs. That's just maddening to me. I hope (if we do keep him) that he can return to his late 2009 season form because he is a solid player. He just isn't the sack meister that Ware is and that's why he will always be quickly scorned.

They did what they had to do to purge the roster of people that had to go so who did they lock up for 8 million on the line last year to replace the older guys that needed to go. Oh right no one

Just for grins this is how PFF ranked them...

Smith #2
Spencer #10
Houston #13
Reed #14
Kerrigan #19
Acho #25

Brian Waters would of helped... No doubt about it.

But he's not a center.

And secondly how often do this old-age reclamation projects actually work out?

I find it very hard to believe that Gurode would have been as bad as Costa.
He was never very good as guard so that play down in Baltimore AT guard meant very little.

Interesting, but based on nothing more than the 'ol eyeball test I think we can all name 10 OLB better than Spencer (and I'd include Smith, Houston and Kerrigan on that list myself). The question remains, would you rather have Spencer for the franchise tag/Brooks money? Or be paying rookie scale for one of the other players on that list? Personally, I don't think you lose much, if anything, for a fraction of the price Spencer will command in FA.

I agree. Gurode's skills are naturally in decline, but he still is a strong bull in the middle that's hard to get around in pass protection. Where his decline shows most is in his run blocking because his skills in space were never very good to begin with.

The difference being that pff actually watched and evaluated every snap that all of those guys played and graded them based on having done that.
