Good luck with his decision! I’m with you, does he really need to be going to the Middle East to take on Iran, Syria, the Houthi‘s etc? Does he really need to get involved in defending Taiwan, Ukraine, for what?! It’s great for discipline, direction and making him a man but lots of hot spots in the world and it would seem that we just love to push buttons.

The guys that did serve in Desert Storm etc I’m sure it was an experience of a lifetime, I’m happy that you were able to come home hopefully relatively unscathed. I wish you luck in your guidance to him And his decision.
 
Well, he signed up last night - thank you for everybody that replied.
MEPS is next with a ship date possibly in August to Parris Island - then 10 days off - followed by 30 days of combat training in North Carolina.
After those 30 days are up, he’ll be heading to school to learn about his job in the Marine Corps.

Times change, back in the day it was Grunts, Admin/Supply and that was pretty much it. Boot camp and ITS should be a piece of cake as long as you have your mind right. Also would be wise to start putting in some roadwork, jogging etc as well as push ups and exercises for upper body strength now instead of waiting til Boot. Also, one more thing. Tell him never to be last in anything. :laugh:

They will try to get him to take a MOS that they need bodies in but tell him to hold fast to what he wants. It is the last time he will have any power for some time.

Just because he signed up does not mean he is required to go in. Had a friend sign up, went through asvab, went to meps for the physical..passed physical. Then they asked if there were any medical issues they need to know about.
He was a very good high school wrestler but all four seasons his season was cut short due to his shoulder popping out of joint. He got scared and told them. They flagged him.

Great advice ! Thx - yeah that’s my concern from day 1 - they push him into a spot they need.
Apparently infantry is backed up - I give those men and women huge credit for wanting that slot.

Physically prepared to perform with a can do and positive attitude. As you rise in rank, look after your men and take care of them and make sure they know their jobs. Team work and execution to standard.

Be where you are supposed to be, when you are supposed to be there, and with what you are supposed to have.

Don't disobey a direct order.
 
Right now, I would fully look into being a drone operator and work to become fully skilled. 6 month school.
After being in the field at multiple locations and keeping up with promotion requirements, one will be skilled to excellerate promotion positions. Then progress in MOS or go to school and get a degree in engineering. Highly focused earning ability and demands.

Select the station of choice or stand up and grow.

It teaches you leadership, discipline, hard work, and life is not a bunch of freebies, shortcuts, and nothing is just handed to you. Everyday now I use the same discipline techniques at work & home. You will make friends that will be your brothers for life and they always have your back . Even now, we support each other. Boot camp will be a very hard test. It's just like the opening scene from the movie " Full Metal Jacket" but it's to get rid of the idiots, mental defects,and Mama's Boys. It makes you a Man. I don't think they can hit you like in the movie anymore, but only the tough make it out. I got pushed around, had my wall locker thrown at me, but as long as he does his job, keeps his mouth shut, doesn't take any short cuts and doesn't get upset with his feelings hurt by being called everything in the book, he will be fine. Just encourage him, write him while in Boot Camp and tell how you are so proud of him.

I have never hired or worked with a Marine who disappointed me. Army… different story, But yes, whatever it is, the Marines build solid men.

Army's moto was leave no man behind and were Marine instructors for the M-1 when they came aboard with the weapon.
 
The Marines came up under the Naval Department and their character reflects that role and mental set.

The Army is the oldest organization of the US Government. The Army Air Corp later became the Air Force.
