Florida Rob, glad to see the sludge talked helped. Oil is very important to any type of engine, do not trust 16 year old tatooed dudes with your car, ever. They think leaving your car w/o oil is funny....trust me.

print out some copies of the TSB (Tech service bulit) for your year car...yes you can find it via google. Show that to your service adviser then tell him you'd like a loaner via Toyota untill your truck is ready.

If the service guy still thinks you need to pay for all that crap while they change your engine...please inform them you'd like to review the scope of TSB coverage with a NA Toyota rep directly.

Painful but have fun.

I called corporate Toyota today and did get some information. They directed me to the Customer Service REp for that particular dealership. I don't want to follow thru with that until after my car is put back together and running perfectly. My problem with the whole situation is that the Service Department were never forthcoming about the problem. They kept asking me quesions about how often I changed the oil, if I ever noticed sludge before and so and and then acted like they were doing me a favor by rebuilding my engine. For them doing a favor they were asking me to do some general maintenance. Flush the radiator, flush the transmission, (things I did about 30,000 miles ago) new fiters, flush the AC(they put in a new AC last year) a few other things for about $650. It really is not the costs. It is the perception that he was doing me a favor and if he did those things he wanted me to do him a favor of a lot of maintenance. Maybe I needed to do those things anyway but I have a feeling I didnt and it was Toyotas reponsibility just to fix it.

...to the are dealer rep. Let him know that you want all the info out in the open. It's your best way to ensure that all the t's are crossed and the i's dotted.

Don't let this get out of hand, get some documentation going.
