But I think for many within the business model, the customer acquisition costs are so high that it becomes a huge challenge to make the whole thing profitable.

You got me there, but its because if you adjust netflix's valuation to that of its nearest public competitors, the market is pricing in essentially 5% growth annually with almost no customer loss with the figure below 1%. At the elementary level companies are valued on a cash flow and time basis, so inherently their business model is great since it has not yet failed... but it won't last forever, or it'll get to a billion worldwide subscribers and it will become entertainment itself.
