Three new wines have arrived that are supposed to be top shelf! I'm excited to try them.
  • Penfolds 2013 Bin 9 Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Sbragia 2013 Andolsen Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Wynns 2010 Black Label Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon

Hey Sam.

The Sbragia winery also had a great Sauvignon Blanc that was recently out. The label looks pretty much the same. I tried a lot of whites this summer and didn't come across it until late august - but it was one of my favorites. Highly recommended. I don't remember price but it was under 20$. Let me know how their Red is when you try it.

I had a penfolds Cabernet-Shiraz the other day. I don't remember exactly what one as a friend had purchased it - but I generally find that the Australian blends of cabernet and Shiraz are very good for under 20$ wines.

Since you like Cabernet Sauvignon also consider trying a Cabernet Franc if you come across one - usually blended with merlot or cabernet sauvignon in Bordeaux style wines but sometimes you can find it on its own. I had one from Pedroncelli Winery - the Barrel select 2013 from dry creek valley - ordered it from an online site. 14.99 - and it was very good. Going to order some more.

Also, I had mentioned Barolo's in an earlier post.

The 2010 Barolo's are being talked about as the best vintage in 20 years or so. These are wines from North Italy (Nebiolo grape) - can be pricey due to supply and demand and the fact that its a difficult grape to grow, harvest and work with. But you can find some online for around 30-45 dollars.

It's definitely a wine that you can hold and age - however the reports are that a lot of the bottles from this vintage are approachable now. The classic profile for these wines is "tar and roses". If you have one that is true to the profile, you can smell rose petals as soon as you open the bottle - a very fragrant wine but with a bold finish. Its recommended to open this wine and let it breathe for a while before drinking one or you can decant it and drink a little sooner. I usually open one and wait about 2-3 hours - also its a good wine with a big meal more so than something to drink on its own.

Anyway - just mentioning the Barolo's because your starting a collection and the 2010 vintage is getting crazy ratings. I would recommend trying one and if you like it picking up a couple more to hold.

I found this new site called CellarTracker.com. OMG I love it! hah

I've loaded my wines in my collection into it. That place is awesome! It keeps track of how many I have too haha. 63 bottles consisting of 34 different wines. :)

cellar tracker is fantastic, there's also an app that will let you scan a bootle of wine to add it to your collection.

Vivino is a pretty handy app. Let's you scan the label on a bottle of wine and tells you the average prices people have paid for it and gives you reviews of the wine. Also gives you links to where you can buy it.

Cellar Tracker now does this using the Vivino search image / bar code search. I guess they paid for access to their technology stack. With those features, that site is unbelievably awesome. :) It has a very active user base too to discuss wines and stuff. I'm very excited about it. I've already donated money to them because it's so worth it.

This is what I was using prior to finding Cellar Tracker. I still use it when I'm in the stores trying to find information on wines before I buy them. I also buy a lot of wines directly from Vivino when they buy them in bulk. Though, they don't always mark them all down as much as they say they are (I can find the wines cheaper online other places sometimes) and some of the rating they show from Somms I think might be something other than truth. Though for the most part, the wines are still decent to very good.

Going to Napa with my wife in February. Going to need a third job when I get back to support all the wine clubs I'm likely to join while there.
