Anybody else dissapointed in Sam Willams?

He has 4 tackles
TFL
And a sack for 9 yards
In 48 snaps including 9 special teams snaps.
And a PFF grade of 84 vs the Cardinals
True but he played late when all of the second teamers were out of the game. Williams, a former second round pick with four years experience, got his sack and TFL against guys who won't be in the NFL in a couple weeks. If he was the player the Cowboys hoped he wouldn't have been playing in the 4th quarter of a meaningless preseason game.

I just think he’s limited. He’s a guy who was raw when we got him. He’s had a new DC essentially every year and has to battle injuries. We screwed up his development. This isn’t an excuse this is just the nfl. Some can handle it some can’t. I never saw him in college I remember the hype he had but I read his story and yeah that guy was raw he literally just started playing football when we got him. Probably should’ve passed on that in the second.
4.46 40 time

He has played a ton of preseason, game snaps and very few impact plays. Anybody else dissapointed?
The time to be disappointed with him
Was several seasons ago.

I don’t expect anything from him anymore so there’s nothing to be disappointed about.

I think they’re trying to showcase him for a trade.

They’d save a lot more against the cap with a trade than a release.

My belief is that they’d prefer to move him rather than keep him.
It's only $2M and they wouldn't get more than a 6th and maybe not that.

Not really disappointed because my expectations are he’s a depth guy who’s got game experience. I was disappointed 2 or 3 years ago. But now he’s a very cheap veteran who’s is here for depth and to be a backup. For what we’re paying him he’s fitting into the role.

The same reason I wasn’t disappointed in Howell for throwing the pick in the end zone. He’s a backup and a cheap backup and that’s his role. So when Howell and Williams play like back ups then they’re living up to my expectations.

Now this is a different conversation during rookie year and 2nd year. That’s when I was really disappointed.

I'm not sure why anyone would be disappointed at this point. He is who he has been. The expectations should have been low this preseason.

And I think he'll get the final OLB roster spot because of this. IMO, due to his special teams play, players like Tyrus Wheat and Isaiah Land had to clearly outplay him. They have one more game to do it, but I think at this point we'll keep Williams. The other option would be Marist Liufau since either would be kept more as a special-teammer than OLB/DE, but I do think Williams offers more as an OLB/DE than Liufau does.

However, there is also the question of how many OLBs/DEs are we going to have active. Gary, Eze, Miller, Houston and Lawrence are probably going to all be on the active roster, so can we afford to carry a sixth one to games? If not, do we even keep a sixth one on the 53? We might could get Land and Wheat on the PS, and maybe even Liufau.

To be honest why would I be disappointed? This is like a Randy Gregory thing We had low expectations they have all the athleticism in the world but maybe not the mental makeup to play the NFL game and be consistent at it...

Right!
Because they simply just rotated from the first game.
If you noticed Liafau was paired as the other pass rusher on that play as he was in the first game!

Land is competing vs Houston as both are relegated to pass rusher specialist due size and frame limitations vs the run.
Williams has 3 career blocked punts and can even function as the gunner.
He's the sp team's replacement for Goodwin but can also provide snaps as OLB!

I don’t think it was DC and scheme changes, he just didn’t develop his personal pass rush ability and his traits just aren’t enough to win reps regularly. He’s just super average and didn’t develop anything to make himself stand out (regardless of scheme).

Yeah, if we need to bring in OL, Sam is the one to be cutting…..basically everyone else has shown more than he has the past few seasons…..no reason to keep him over any of the other OLB/DE players
He has been living of his 2nd round pedigree for too long. I'd give a shot to the younger guys or guys who have show something this training camp. Even Taoia impressed a little bit.
