I too learned it that way. To this day I pronounce "Caesar" closer to the german "Kaiser" than the romantic language-influenced method. It drove my English teacher crazy when we were doing Shakespeare's Julius Caesar-- "WE'LL PRONOUNCE IT THE WAY SHAKESPEARE DID!"
