Anybody Think We Pick Up Melton's Option?

It is a team option that would pay Melton around $9 million a year, basically top 5 DT money. I think the Cowboys would have to be crazy to pick up that option, no way in hell is Melton a top 5 DT. He barely plays more than 25 snaps a game.

For top 5 money, I expect Warren Sapp out there, not some guy that has to be on a 20 snap rotation.

I would not pick up that option as well. I think they will renegotiate what his true value is at and go from there. I think we can afford to lose him the way Ty Crawford is playing.

Here's my question: Is it negotiable? I'd like to keep him, but not at that cap hit. I think even he know's he's not worth that kind of money given his production right now.

I don't know if they can renegotiate it or not............................I hope they can, I don't want to lose him because I think he is a good player, but no way in hell is he a top 5 DT.

Sure they can. It would be up to him. They could also release him and let him get his market value and still sign him.

Like others have said, need to see how he progresses over the entire season. If he suddenly breaks through in the 2nd half and reaches 8-9 sacks, they pick up the option.
Best case scenario, Melton continues to improve, stays healthy and at seasons end he and the team work out a more reasonable multi year deal with a lower cap number.

I believe the team is committed to a legitimate talented 8 man DL rotation. Having both Melton and Crawford at the 3 allows the team to commit valuable resources to the DE position.

I hope we can keep him, but as of this moment, he's not worth that kind of money.

8-9 sacks? i will settle for 5 sacks and call it a productive season.Crawford is playing well but he is far from a pro bowler which Melton was and still capable if can shake off all his injuries.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm making a lot of estimations and generalizations) but it might be worth it to resign him. I think we now see the importance of the interior of the line. We addressed it on O-line and we have some potential on D-line.

At the moment, Melton is starting to get his legs back and Crawford is trying to figure out where he belongs. Despite the limited number of snaps, they seem to have been having success when Crawford and Melton are on the field at the same time (I assume this only happens in the Nickel). So, let's say we have 60 defensive snaps a game and 40 of them are in the Nickel. So they're on the field together for 40 snaps a game, plus they split the other 20 snaps in the base at the 3-tech (so they each get to rest 10 snaps a game). That means you have Melton and Crawford each playing 50 snaps a game (40 of them together) and then 20 snaps from whoever is at 1-tech.

If you look at it that way, it might be worth it to keep both of them. They have the potential to be one of the nastiest DT duos in the league. But we'll see later in the season. If Melton gets back to 100% and they're both on the field at the same time (and are both productive) then we'll have to consider keeping him next year.

Every week somebody asks this same question. As of right now the answer is no. I'd ask him to renegotiate or let him walk...

Melton hasn't been that good so much so I think your going to see alot more of Coleman going forward. At this stage, I think Melton is a rotational guy and no longer guy we saw in Chicago. His value is around $4 million a year.

Has he ever had 9 sacks in a full season? Foolish to think he can do the rest of this season.

Point taken. Just threw a high number out there. My point is if he blows up in the 2nd half of the season, they almost have to pick up the option if no multi-year deal can't be reached.
