It's really not surprising since the Apple's competitors are just now releasing tablets in 2011. You had maybe one company with tablets.
Samsung tried to claim they sold 2 million in 2010, which would have put competitors at at least $1 billion (rather than $34 million). But it turned out they only shipped 2 million.

But, yeah, like I said, it shouldn't be surprising. Xoom sales (in 2011) have reportedly been terrible and it's the only real competitor so far.

I heard they had a lot of RMAs but they didn't confirm it. Just something I read somewhere on Engadget.

I'm beginning to hate Samsung.

TVs yes. Phones and tablets..I'd rather not say. They seem to not offer up to date support. Growing too big and too fast in this market IMO.

Just for you! Saw this today:

Samsung reportedly installing keylogger software on laptops

By Darren Murph posted Mar 30th 2011 6:28PM

We'll start by saying that we've reached out to Samsung for a response here, but as of now, no reply has been given -- neither a confirmation nor a refusal of truth. Why bother mentioning that? If this here story proves true, Sammy could have a serious problem on its hands -- a problem that'll definitely start with a rash of negative PR, and a quandary that could very well end the outfit up in the courtroom. According to a report by Mohamed Hassan over at Network World, Samsung allegedly took the initiative to install a keylogger into his recently purchased R525 and R540 laptops. The app was noticed right away after a security scan on both systems, with StarLogger popping up with the c:\windows\SL directory. Where things really get strange is on the support line; reportedly, a supervisor informed Mr. Hassan (after an earlier denial) that the company did indeed install the software at the factory in order to "monitor the performance of the machine and to find out how it is being used." Unfortunately, it's difficult to say if this is a widespread issue, or if the tale is entirely correct, but we get the feeling that Samsung will have little choice but to respond in some form or fashion here shortly. Naturally, we'll keep you abreast of the situation -- meanwhile, you may want to reconsider that hate-filled comment you're about to bang out on your Samsung laptop, and instead, feast your eyes on the video just past the break.

Update: Kudos to Samsung for hitting this head-on. An hour after we inquired for comment, a company spokesperson tossed over this official quote: "Samsung takes Mr. Hassan's claims very seriously. After learning of the original post this morning on NetworkWorld.com, we launched an internal investigation into this issue. We will provide further information as soon as it is available."

I read this. You've got to be a bleeping moron to do something like that. It doesn't matter what you are *actually* doing with it, you do not install monitoring software on your product like that without telling the purchaser about it AND giving them a way to disable it.

It appears that Samsung has responded to the claim of a keylogger and offers proof that it isn't true.

===============OS News Article====================

Well, this clearly needs to get its own item. Yesterday we linked to a story about how Samsung is supposedly installing keyloggers onto its laptops to track user behaviour. Samsung immediately launched an investigation into the matter, and has come to a rather humbling conclusion: the guy coming up with the story is incompetent, and Samsung has the evidence to prove it.

Mohamed Hassan, who initially supposedly found the keylogger, ran a security program on his brand new Samsung laptop, and that program came to the conclusion that the keylogger StarLogger was installed in the %SystemRoot%\sl. However, Samsung immediately investigated the matter, and came to a rather humbling conclusion. Well, humbling for Hassan, that is.

I can only go by anecdotal evidence since I've not seen any hard numbers, but the Xoom WiFi (released on the 27th) has been selling very briskly. Amazon sold out the first day and there were zero local stores here that had any in stock after about 1pm that Sunday. You have to take that for what it is since who knows how many each store (I checked BB, Staples, and WalMart) initially received.

I bought one (Xoom WiFi) through Amazon and am very happy with it. It goes so far beyond what my iPad can do, it's not even funny...and with further refinement of the OS and the upcoming Honeycomb App deluge, I don't see these these tablets going anywhere but up. I don't think Apple has much to worry about for now, but Android tablets are definitely going to make some noise (especially if Google can reign in fragmentation).

The iPad was only competing basically with the Galaxy Tab in 2010 and the Tab I don't think was released until November. Not really a fair comparision. The Galaxy tab wasn't even using the tablet version of Android. Samsung just wanted to rush out a product. The Xoom is far and away a better product than the Tab was. The iPad will still lead the way, but I think the Xoom is the first real step for Android on the media table. (not the regular tablet market) In the end, it will probably follow the same path as the smartphone market.

Well, since you want to go the "anecdotal" route, Morgan Keegan spoke with 80 retail stores and discovered they're selling on average 2 units per day, which Morgan Keegan estimates would put them at about 300,000 units IN AN ENTIRE QUARTER. Sales will only decrease for the Xoom in future quarters. By comparison, between 5 and 10 million iPads are sold every quarter.

There will be no competitor for the iPad until the app selection becomes more robust.

Until then you will have failed tablets like the Samsung Galaxy.

God knows the Android platform failed even though it has far less apps than Apple's app store. :muttley:

Not sure what's going on in your head today, but my comment had nothing to do with the Android platform.

A specific tablet was mentioned. Are you saying that the Galaxy Tab was a success?

How many native apps for the Galaxy Tab? How many native apps for the Xoom?

[off topic]
Of course there are a gazillion Android devices out there. When you can buy one and get ten free that kind of thing sort of happens.

I'm willing to bet if Apple were to ever offer a 'buy one get one free' promotion and sell their handsets for a couple of bucks they would have a gazillion more out in the wild.

To be fair though, your article points to the 3G Xoom, rather than the wifi model that was just released this Sunday. Again, just going by my own (admittedly narrow) observations, the wifi version is selling far more than the 3G version. It's true that nobody was camped out waiting for it, but again, Amazon sold out of whatever stock they had (and you can bet it was a lot) before the preorder period was up and zero local stores (in the backwoods of Maine) had it in stock.

I'd love to see numbers on this version. Not that it matters much personally, though. The Xoom is a great product and has consigned my iPad (1st gen) to the closet.

Someone stole the floor (electronically attached) Xoom at my local Bestbuy. :laugh2:

I wanted to check it out, but no dice. They too were sold out.
