i realize we're now sporting a 3-4 against a usual 4+ o-line blocking scheme, but has anyone else noticed the inability of our down lineman to penatrate in pass situationand and create an smidgen of QB pressure w/o the support of a blitz/stunt scheme?

i know it's still early to judge and/or make conclusions but i am concerned in that we seem to run into the many of the same situations now as we did last year where QBs have all day to pick apart our backfield.

don't get me wrong.....i acknolegde we made huge strides this off season in aquiring several d-fense additions/upgrades however, way too many times i'm still left scratching my head at the outcome of various situations. our new/improved roster and d-fense scheme, on paper and in theory, seems tremendous. so far taking the blitz risk, good or bad, is the only way we've been able to penatrate and pressure.

I have noticed that we tend to bull rush the ends and their guards are just pushing us outside past the QB creating a nice horseshoe pocket for the other QB. When that breaks down he then gets pressude from everywhere. Its those quick release passers that hurt us.

Incorrect. 3.5 of our sacks have come from the D-Line. The other half have come from Roy and the LBs. And I'm pretty sure at least one of the sacks from the DL came when we blitzed.

Your right I had wrote down a sack when it was a couple half sacks

we should have a top 5 ranked defense if roy just intercepts the pass.lol

but moving along

by years end we will have one of the top 5 defenses in the nfl...........stats might not say it tho.

Who cares who gets the sacks. It doesn't always show up in the numbers who is creating the pressure around the QB which flushes him into getting sacked by other teammates.

We have 7 sacks in 2 games, that tells me we are on the right track so far.

The point is we can't get pressure on the QB unless we blitz. Eventually, that will kill you. Blitzing should be a luxury, not a necessity.

I don't think it shows anything yet. We had 6 sacks vs the Bears last year, yet we finished near the bottom of the league in sacks.

first of all its the 3-4 you don't expect ur down lineman to sack the QB every down or every game they are run supporters its up to the linebacker and safeties to put the pressure on the QB. and our down lineman look pretty good i've seen a bunch of play were ferg pushed the center 7 yards in the backfield so i believe there doing they job

Someone needs to learn a little about the 3-4: THE DL DOES NOT GET SACKS. THAT IS NOT THEIR PRIMARY JOB-THEY ARE TO OCCUPY THE O LINE TO FREE THE LB's.
Now in the 4-3 it IS the DL main job to get sacks. CLEAR?

Someone needs to realize I was referring to our NICKEL defense at the end of the game. We weren't running a 3-4 when The skins scored 2 TDs on Monday.

The DL's job in the Nickel and Dime defense is to sack QBs. If we have team down at the end of the game we won't be running a 3-4 against them cuz they'll be coming out passing.

CLEAR?

since were all a bunch of mind readers, you all should know Ive been impressed with the d-line and defense this season, with the exception of those 2 TD's. When is Zimmer going to acknowledge the fact that Pass Coverage is RW weakness and not put him back in coverage in those situations?

Move RW to LB in those situations and get another DB back there. :starspin

the one thing I noticed on those two catches was that Roy was back in pass defense where Davis should of been.
I understand that Zimmer put him back there, but Roy is not a pass defender, and if you can't trust your FS to make those kind of plays, then its time to get a new FS !!!

All those two catches did was expose that weakness. Will other teams be watching? you betcha !!!

that being said, overall I think our defense is vastly improving week by week.
come on, outside of only TWO catches, our defense was controlling them.
I am not worried about this team, actually felt better about them after the game, other than the sickening fact that we lost to the Commanders, but you can't win all of them.

Davis was back there. He and Roy both were covering half the field. Davis came over on the first TD because it was more toward the middle of the deep zone and the second one was all on Roy's side.

Some of the sacks were not on true blitzes. We are not used to watching the 3-4 and a lot of times it looks like a blitz but is not. It confuses the offfense.

Well, we had been confusing the offense until zimmy went WUSS again...

Our nickle 4 man front played almost the whole 4th 1/4...Thats when pressure stopped, thats when they knew exactly who was coming...Thats when Ware stopped getting near the QB because he was forced to go up against a OT like Samuels...

Thats where we lost the game...
