BP knows what Coleman can do at FS. He's seeing what Davis has learned and what Watkins brings.

I'm hoping Davis as starter at FS is nothing more then following the maximum that a starter must be beaten out by his challenger--rather then the job just given to the challenger--at least in minicamp. Hopefully development in TC will allow the whole FS position to work itself out so we get a good upgrade over last season's performance.

Agree don't understand this whole Coleman at CB and FS. I assumed Coleman was brought in to start/compete at FS but, since he also spent most of his NFL career at CB, could also help us as an extra backup CB. Surprised by Parcells comment and certainly don't believe we planning to carry 6 CBs unless Parcells not thrilled with #5 Nate Jones OR Parcells seriously thinking of moving Reeves to FS & wants Coleman around as another inexpensive backup at CB & FS. Reeves certainly has much better coverage skills then don't know how well he tackles/plays the running game.

Whatever happens, I don't want Davis to win starting job by default so hopefully Pile (this his first minicamp/upcoming TC with Cowboys), Watkins & maybe Reeves will be fighting to start. Don't realistically expect either Pile or Watkins to win starting job but hopefully Watkins is good enough to become primary backup at FS.

Admit to being a little concerned we might end up with platooning at FS. Davis in against the run & Reeves in obvious passing downs. But that leaves us vulnerable on 1 & 10, etc.

You shouldn't put too much into any of the position/string placements right now.

Makes sense to me. The base defense is used on traditional running downs: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd(and short).

When we go into our nickel or dime, Coleman goes in at FS to defend against the pass.

Keith is an excellent FS to have in there against the run or on short yardage.

We just have to trust the coaches that Davis has learned to not get beat on play-action.

I think part of it is just letting Davis lose the starting job so he doesn't feel like he just lost the job without the new guy earning it. Also, for Coleman, I think Parcells knows he's a better corner than he is a safety, and if he's the 4th corner, then Reeves could move to FS, where he could potentially excel.

Hopefully, Davis has learned that he should keep speedy receivers like Santana Moss in front of him and not allow them to run pass him. :banghead:

I've been a little excited ever since Parcells mentioned Reeves at FS. He has terrific coverage skills... particularly for a FS... and he could be a great complement to Roy Williams.

If he has the toughness to play FS, then we really might have a find there. Reeves is actually a lot like Huff as a S, with a similar skill set, so hopefully with Parcells mentioning it, he'll get his chance to show what he can do at FS.

I don't think he'll balk at it like Pete Hunter did.

It looks to me like Parcells does not want to depend on an over the hill Coleman to be the man. He was brought in as insurance, not to start so BP wants to see if Coleman can still play CB effectively. If he can play CB then he can play FS from an ability standpoint and that would make him valuable as a backup for two positions. And he is still a safety net if things don't work out at FS.

I believe that Parcells still hopes Davis can get better at FS or that Reeves can do the job and he may harbor hopes that Watkins can step in. When Parcells talks about Watkins I get the impression that he is really impressed with the kid and is trying to curb his enthusiasm knowing that Watkins is not ready yet.

:hammer: , we have a winner. Its not hard to see exactly what BP is doing. Coleman was brought in as insurance. It was Davis' first year as a starter, so you have to see if he has improved. You add that to the fact that we matched the Saints offer sheet and you don't have a choice but to play him with the 1st team. I think his performance last season was way over blown. Sure, he has some faults, but the guy does well vs. the run. If he has studied better and recognize formations better, we're on to something and you have to see if he has done those things.

BP has always felt that FS is not a top priority and he has shown it by trying to turn running QBs into FS(Danzler, Frost). They just must be willing to tackle and Davis does this very well.

i don't trust BP to develop the O much, but the man knows D. if he likes davis, he must be good cause he already had to "forgive" actions he's canned other players for.

BP does not care how much you signed for- he will play the guy that plays best. Coleman is someone that BP knows and outside of seeing if he has lost a step or something like that he does not need to see him play. That is why he is going to be tried at CB to see if he still has the physical skills to do that.
BP already knows what he can do at FS.

Getting burned by Santana Moss is something that happened to nearly every DB in the league last year.

That missed tackle on Ron Dayne has me more peeved.

When Parcells mentioned Reeves at safety, he was talking about the same role as Coleman; a corner who could play nickel safety. It sure sounded like neither is in the mix as the starter. It appears right now its Davis with Watkins and Beriault as possibilities.
